Before I begin let me tell you that I know this has been suggested before but this is my own take on it.
So currently the average block distance between ground level and bedrock is about 70 blocks. Iron is easily found in exposed stone areas, open caves and more! One iron pick will dig 251 blocks, that means that by going around 10-20 blocks deep in the earth or just finding iron exposed you'll soon be digging to bedrock/diamond layer in no time. By making the worlds deeper you could easily fix three things. One, ensuring the world is realistically deep. Two, ensuring less random mines are hit on popular servers. Three, making iron less a bit less OP. Now you're probably wondering, "What about diamond? If the world is that deep diamond will be way to deep to get to! But my idea to fix that is that diamond layer is still relatively as many layers deep as it is now it just isn't as close to bedrock. Now you're probably thinking, "But what's bellow diamond layer?" Obviously massive ore filled caverns like this! Once you have braved the deep deep world you get your reward of a beautiful cavern! So it would all fit together like this: Green = average ground level.
Beige = iron layer Gold = Gold layer Blue = diamond layer (notice it's larger) Red = redstone layer (where redstone is commonly found. ) Black = Ore filled Cavern!

But in fairness, the actual suggestion isn't bad. It would be nice if "Dig From Dirt to Bedrock" was a feat that actually took some time.
It's the new forum.
It's uber glitchy. Sorry about that.
