Ever since 1.2, we've had water mobs (the squid), but squids are nothing more than a passive mob that drops nothing but a nigh useless item. Notch once stated that he planned to implement a Hostile mob. I think its about time we take him up on his word. A crocodile should be our first hostile water mob. Found in Swamps, Jungles and maybe even Desert biomes. They should spawn in water and swim in it, the way that squids do, but should also be capable of land transportation, but perhaps at a slower speed(?). Maybe they only attack when a player enters water, or maybe they could be a netural mob rather than a hostile one. As for item drops, I was thinking maybe something already in the game such as fish or bones, or maybe a new item could be added for them exclusively; Something along the lines of 'Crocodile Tooth' which could be an alchemy item.
This is just something I think would fit the game perfectly, seeing as how we have the two new Swamp and Jungle Biomes, and a lack of Hostile Water Mobs. Any thoughts on this Idea?
Okay, I know this is going to sound harsh, but.
You made this idea way too complicated.
Crocodiles can spawn in any water.
Simplified.
Crocodiles drop Flint.
Now we don't have to add a "tooth" item, but still has the same basic purpose.
Crocodiles are hostile towards other Sea mobs, but neutral to players.
Again, simplified.
This is more likely for people to read and understand, and easier for Game Devs to implement.
Other than that, my opinion.
Crocodiles would be nice to have, yes, but keep in mind it plays no major role in the "ecosystem" of mobs that Mojang has put together, like the Golems defending the Villagers and the Zombies being hostile, or Creepers being afraid of Ocelots and Ocelots being afraid of things that aren't holding Fish, which in turn leads Wolves to hunt for Sheep, which leaves Wool as an indicator to the Player of all these things happening. Crocodiles could potentially make "drop" animals rarer (e.g. Cows) because of the NPC slots being clogged up. But, this is a game, and games should be fun and creative and filled with new things to keep people playing it. So, I'd have to say Yes to crocodiles.
Crocodiles sound like a great idea! We need Crocs. I specifically like the crocodile tooth idea, we need more potion reagents. Perhaps crocodiles could also drop large amounts of leather, let's say, double the leather of a cow? Or maybe even a NEW item, tough leather, which is weaker than iron, but stronger than normal leather.
Actually, they could just get permission and implement the Crocodile from Mo Creatures, then go on from there. (Tweak their behavior, so that they only go after stuff within 2-5 blocks of water or in it. They could also make them tamable.) I don't know if they should drop their present drop in vanilla Minecraft, but if they do, Croc armor superceeds Leather in durability and comes somewhat close to Iron in protection. (Crocs are known to have pretty tough hides, right?) The catch is that fighting them isn't necessarily easy and if you get in the water..

"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
