EDIT: A diamond / obsidian golem could be used as a boss mob in strongholds / nether fortresses.
It could, but I would rather unique challenge mobs for those spaces.
IMO, golems are already the challenge mobs for villages.
Plus, I would just rather high-tier golems to be made exclusively by the player.
That way, they wouldn't need Testificate heads! They could have Cylon visors or something. Look more robot-y.
I was actually thinking about something similar to this. Perhaps we could have Gold Golems that are identical to Iron Golems in stats, but actually follow the player? Gold is definitely rarer than iron, so it could be considered balanced, if you try really hard... I suppose Diamond would also work, but at that point I think people would be expecting stat boots, and I'm not sure they need more.
I'd rather not have tiered golems. I'd prefer each golem to be unique. I made a thread in the suggestions forum listing possible golem types, but it got buried. But a gold golem that shoots at range could be pretty good. I imagine that it would have to have very little health, and with a pretty long recharge time, though, so as not to make the other golems obsolete, and so as not to make the game to easy.
A diamond golem would be useless, since an iron golem can already one-shot kill most everything. Maybe as a boss in those square abandoned mineshaft rooms, and which drops diamonds as a reward, but other than that, I don't see much use for it (aside from maybe aesthetics and to show off how rich you are.)
An obsidian golem, I mentioned in my thread. I proposed it to have very high health, and very low attack power. It is naturally non agressive towards hostile mobs, but hostile mobs will tend to prefer to attack it over other things.
If it had wheels, it would fall over.
If it shot something it wouldn't go far because it's a fat block of gold.
If it had any combustion in the shot, the gold would melt.
All iron golems do is smack you with metal arms, and that's all I need.
Do you notice what's lacking? well, we lack a blocking golem. One with higher health and lower damage output. Was this what you meant with the obsidian golem, LynxZ?
Indeed, that is what I meant.
KyoShinda, in Minecraft, weight means nothing. So does temperature. You can have a block of gold floating in lava. I think a gold robot which shoots slabs of gold can work in Minecraft physics. If iron golems are all you need, that's fine. We're just talking about possibilities.

Well, most things in MC at least try to make sense. In this case if I were to make a golden golem it would be more practical in its design. Maybe it would be a hexapod that uses a rope of golden strands to rope mobs? I just find a gun out of gold rather illogical in every single way. This game does have 'shortcuts' for the sake of gameplay, but the devs try to keep everything in logical boundaries when they can.
Although, we allready have ranged golems, the snow golems. Giving them the possibility of dealing damage and a higher attack speed would open up for another ranged golem, which fires slower.
Snow golems actually have three uses, but none of them are range damage output, and it should stay that way.
Their three uses are: Luring mobs (as a distraction or trap), sounding an alarm, and marking land with snow.

Don't forget the purpose of farming snowballs (which is different than marking land).

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned. But the best use for snowballs so far, is to make more snow golems.
So basically, snow golems are self-sustaining lifeforms. Unlike iron golems.
I think it'd be funny if Gold Golems were the only ones that were friendly. Gold is the most fragile of the materials you can make stuff with. I bet a Gold Golem would have three or four hearts, tops.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
A gold golem should be ranged and have less hearts than a iron, but still realize it's made of metal. One idea that I like would be a golem that plants trees or one that can be programmed to build or farm stuff. Maybe a redstone golem for that.
I guess it'd be alright for some type of super rare mob but it's bad enough iron is so easy to collect diamond would just be D:
Wait, what? How would this be at all "easy"? You would have to collect 36 diamonds to make this thing.

I know, but 36 diamonds is as much as:
A full set of diamond armor, a full set of diamond tools (including the hoe), and a jukebox.
