I wouldn't want to lose those warning sounds in actual adventure areas (they tell me that I've left a cave branch unexplored nearby). However, I agree that they're really annoying to have going off in my house!
Therefore, what we really need is a device (mod block) that can cancel those sounds in a sphere of some useful radius. Canceling weather sounds (especially thunder) inside my house would be nice too!
If a block can't cancel sounds in a radius, then maybe a new enchantment on my helmet could spare my ears, and I could wear it indoors.

VERY redundant...with the 1.7 update you can configure which sounds to turn off. Just click options, press "Music & Sounds" button. then turn ambtient...

i couldn't think of what to type here, so just read this instead
Though adding such a feature would somewhat useless, as they're helpful to find caves, I have come up with a solution for you:
To you it would be useless, & same could be said with animal noises, they can signal you that they're near by but can also be turned off via options. To him this is not useless, for it would, to quote, scare him out of his pants, for in which case I hope he doesn't venture to close to the new Ocean Monuments.
Maybe cave noises should not be played on peaceful. That gives players an option to turn them off while also forcing you to accept risks in order to have them for finding hidden caves.

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes, and savanna passive mobs.
Ok, that was the strangest descrition of a sound I ever heard.
But OK, it's the sound you hear when you are close to a cave.
Why didn't you type that instead of "ambient" or "cave sound"?
"Cave sound" to me is sounds that comes from inside a cave.
"Ambient" could be anything.
He said ambiant because Ambience is the OFFICIAL word used by Mojang to describe those sounds. So it is you that needs to adjust to the proper terminology here, not him.
The MC 1.7.9 sound settings allows turning the volume up/down/off for "Ambiant/Environment" sounds.
The original poster (like me, too) wanted to be able to turn DOWN the ambiant sounds (those weird sounds generated from being close to a dark cave, most of which make no sense - what the hell, why a TRAIN sound ? ), but NOT the environment sounds (rain, flowing water, fire crackling, etc.).
Omfg playing tekkit it officially impossible. I literally can't get in and climb up my ladders successfully without friecking out from the sphax tpack going FVOOSH RAWR HUUUOHHH DUN DUN DUN ASWWASD
I like to play tekkit classic, but I can't mine in peace without the sounds going RVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. I get frightened by remembering Herobrine, in Singleplayer... And I know the cause. Believe it or not, everyone has a symbol that represents their element called the Zodiac Signs. You can search it up and find yours, but anyway, specific zodiac signs have diferent personalities. Mine is a Lebrah. Lebrahs' get very lonely and dislike solitude. I have a problem with mining in the dark alone listening to **** that scares me. Now, I am all up for this elleged option to turn off The Ambient cave sounds, but not to be specific. Do you know how long/hard it would be for Mojang to make over 13 pannels for sounds, not to mention they would also have to add the animal sounds, and everything. That would take up too much room. And all of that comined would take atleast a year to make. I'm up for just making 1 sound pannel for each Cave Ambience and Animal/Mob Ambience. Who is with me?
Personally, I believe that the cave sounds add to the danger because they play upon your psyche...either frightening you or just annoying you in general. I can't get behind this simply because caving is easy enough as is, you should be a bit rattled while you're down there...and right now, aside from the sounds, there's not much of a reason to fear caving.
I don't know about the others, but I completely support this. I really hate the cave sounds and I do not think anyone should resort to resource packs or mods to disable them.

The line between fantasy and reality is more tenuous than one would think. There is not much difference between the two, only what is and what could be. To be able to completely tell the two apart is an impossibility, a work of fantasy, and any fantasy is merely a possibility, where the impossible becomes possible.

Same. Like what reaverofdarknes1 said, I think the cave noises should be automatically muted on peaceful, or the ambiance thingy in the sound options could be expanded, giving you a menu of what ambiance noises you want to make louder or quieter when you click to it.

The option to do that is only in 1.7 onwards. The original post is over two years old so the version the OP was using wouldn't have had that option. I have the same issue with 1.6.4 as I play mods in it, and the fact you cannot disable the ambiance is a huge nuisance. Utterly worthless noise, IMO, as it doesn't relate to the game world environment in any organic way so it takes you out of your immersion in the game. It's what professionals who work in vg audio would call "a really dumb idea". But this is because in the beginning they got an low-talent amateur to do MC's audio and I guess that even though they're about to hit 50 million sales worldwide, they refuse to replace him and get someone who can improve the audio environment in MC to the level it ought to be because he's a "friend" or whatever. Bros before quality! But yeah, they finally decided to give us an option, very late, to just turn that garbage off, although it's not any use to those of us who still use older versions for one reason or another.
"Low talent amateur"
And what, you're a professional sound technician? Give me a break. C419 is a very good composer in my opinion, and I think all this hate you have is just because you don't like his style.
For instance, I am not a fan of One Direction, but does that mean they're bad musicians? No.
And don't give me the "I'm using a later version so I can't use that feature" crap. No kidding you can't use that! You also can't use sticky slime blocks, the new stone types, the new water blocks, the new bunnies, or the new door types. That is one of the caveats of playing modded minecraft. You knew you wouldn't be able to use 1.7 or 1.8 features when you started playing 1.6 modded, so don't complain about it now.

This could fit perfectly in the Sound Settings.
It already is as of Minecraft 1.7.2, just turn ambient noises off.
This thread should be locked as it got implemented into the game.
