Right now, farm animals are moved with wheat. Isn't that kind of annoying? They'll circle around you and walk over anything. Lava, fire, off cliffs, into traps, near primed TNT, etc.. How come we MUST use wheat? During all times of agriculture, farmers would use hooking tools or whips to control farm animals. Simple as that. Why don't we have that in Minecraft?
Breeding's a big part of the game, since the passive spawn rates were heavily decreased. Basically, right-clicking on a Pig, Sheep, Cow or Chicken with your hoe equipped will make it follow you in a nearly straight line. Right-click them again to let them return to normally walking.
While an animal has been hooked, you're speed will be decreased to sneaking speed. Animals will avoid cliffs, lava, fire or hostile mobs. Wolves wouldn't attack hooked sheep. When you hook, 1 use will be taken from the hoe.
Sheep, Cows and Chickens would walk in a nearly straight line, but Pigs would sometimes fail to hook, but still take a use. (Pigs don't exactly like being controlled or ridden/taken in real life)
TL;DR: I know that's a word wall, but to be shorter.. Right-clicking an animal with a hoe will make them follow you. It will take 1 use.
No. Unless they mate then you right click them with a hoe..Because if you were a pig, and someone right clicked you with a hoe, would you follow them? Honestly I wouldn't..Now for some wheat which is food heck yeah I would..Or if I knew the person gave me food and had a partner (if you know what I mean) for meh..
hmm...I would like a better way to control animals, but this is mostly for putting them in the proper pen.
I don't think I could support this idea since it would very quickly break many many hoes. I'd just use the wheat to herd them like I do now.
Really? How many animals can one herd into the right pen? Just make a few stone hoes and lure any new ones in the pen. Also, they're hard to control with wheat, or that may just be me.

Not that hard to move them...Just make the fence gates two blocks and open both..
I think the system is fine as it is for now. Herding animals is a traditionally labor intensive task and while it's true that shepherds and cowboys used crooked staffs and whips to aid in this process, you don't see a Shepard hooking his staff around a sheep's leg and dragging it for 100 meters to a holding pen.
If you really feel like you need another way to manipulate animals, perhaps the wolves could gain a herding mechanic where you can command them to coax a single sheep to you.
Also I think the new AI system prevents mobs from blindly jumping into ravines, fire pits, lava flows, etc.
