I was thinking about new ways for mobs to influence how the game is approached and what kind of areas are risky and I struck upon an idea; vampires.
Vampires would be savage, but somewhat intelligent creatures, akin to 30 Days of Night, but for the purposes of gameplay, they would behave most like Zombie Pigmen. Traditionally, vampires are vulnerable to sunlight and work in the dark, but the presence of other creatures makes it unlikely that a being with intelligence resembling a human's would try to hunt for blood in these times. Instead, vampires would only spawn in the day, but only in environments that are non-sunlight lit and only on blocks of grass or dirt. This would mean that areas in caves lit by torches with dirt or grass would now be hazardous during the day, and any area lit by lava but not exposed could potentially harbor these threats. They would strike the player and do roughly half of the amount of damage that a strike by a zombie would do, but also add hunger to the player, ignoring food saturation. This would reflect the player being "fed" on by the vampires, and mean that two or more vampires could cause a player to begin taking hunger damage while fighting. They would be naturally aggressive, but walk at the same speed as Zombie Pigmen and cause other vampires in the area to go to them when they are in a combat situation.
To reflect the traditional vampire weakness against wood, wooden swords would do the damage equivalent to a diamond sword, but to help encourage the use of this weakness, all other weapons would need to do less damage.
I imagine them looking rather like desiccated versions of Steve, closer to a skeleton than a zombie.
I think the addition of vampires would add an additional level of challenge and I think creating more situations that call for equipment helps make cave exploration and adventuring efforts more interesting as you have to carefully decide on what is necessary.
Breakdown
Spawning: Daylight hours in environments lit by means other than the sun, and only on dirt or grass.
Attacks: Half of the damage of a zombie, however, each strike adds hunger without consideration of hunger saturation.
A.I: Zombie Pigmen, but aggressive.
Weaknesses: Wooden swords.

Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.
Good idea! I thought of this too. They should also be able to turn into bats, which could fly, but not be able to do any attacks or anything else. If they attack the villager, the villager would become a vampire!

Excuse me, but that was my comment you just read there, bub.
Isn't having them spawn during the day a big middle finger to them? And only spawning on grass and dirt.. Sounds like they rarely spawn and if they do spawn, immediately get burnt by the sun:P
I thought it could be cooler if they looked like villagers. What do they drop?

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
