Iron and gold blocks have a tendency to get struck by lighting more, especially if above elevation 85.
Iron and gold blocks can transmit redstone currants between blocks (ie, replace redstone with iron and gold blocks).
Lightning can be a source of a redstone currant.
If lightning strikes a gold or iron block, it does not create fire.
I think you would also have to have some kind of weather machine to go with it, so this could actually have a use.
I could more see this implemented as a way of of ANTICIPATING weather, more than changing or harnessing it. Perhaps something simple, like the clock or compass, but stationary. Just a little box with a needle that points to pictures on a gauge. Something like a barometer.
I know a bukkit plugin adds this function to servers. It was a while ago, it also added batteries or something I saw it in passing and never really thought about it anymore.
