How about, as the Temperature decreases, Sand starts to look more and more like dry Grass?
This makes extremely smooth transitions between deserts and other biomes, except the Swamp.
In my opinion, the two textures should merge slowly over each other to make the transition. The issue being that they'd have to enable partial transparency in blocks to do so (Water doesn't count)

Oh C'mon... Dozens of people are making mods that delete the changing attribute in Biome affected Blocks. Now you want to appose it by asking Mojang to add more!? I have lost all my sympathy in humanity. I guess next people will be asking for Biome affected glass :sleep.gif: Thank you good Sir.

and before that, people made mods that simulated biome color-specific blocks. People always want different stuff, but Mojang has went in favor of smoothing biome transitions.
Maybe use various damage values for sand? Sand would spawn with different damage values depending on which biome it was generated in. You could grab white sand off a beach, beige sand from a desert, orange sand from another desert, etc. Then I could, for example, wander around until I find orange sand, collect it, and recreate Mars in my backyard. It wouldn't chane colors based on where it is now like grass and leaves and could be dyed the same colors as wool.
