But that would not work at all. Everyone would use short jabs because at the moment they stun, and anyway that attempted to use a powerful attack would be jabbed, stunned, and repeated.
I thought you agreed to turnarounds instead of stuns? Small jabs wouldn't turn around as much or do as much damage, so they wouldn't break a good blocker.

I thought he was referring to the current combat system. As currently the combat makes for a slight stun after a successful attack, with an even longer period of invulnerability, that would not work in our current system as everyone would simply jab every time.
You don't need to move your character, just where he's looking and whether you're holding down the button or not. And he can still move in attack mode, though some weapons might make it slower.
Though Overlord 93's system of attacks seems pretty good.
Oh, OK. It still seems a little stilted compared to the original idea though - needing to look away to adjust your sword angle.

Oh. right. Sorry.

Maybe, but I'd still like to be able to track your opponent instead of being locked in one direction. Maybe a lock-on setup? Press the attack/block button to lock on to your opponent while using the mouse to swing the sword? Edit: Also have being attacked break the lock in addition to turnaround. You'd have to turn around and lock again after being hit.
i think this is a great idea, but minecraft isn't really centred around fighting. and for those people who play with a trackpad, this addition would be hell. getting mobbed my multiple zombies is hard enough as it is, and all other players would have to do is gang up with more than one person onto a single person, and the lone wolf kind of player would be screwed.

But how would you adjust the sword angle while you're not locked on?
Yeah great suggestion definitely makes the combat more realistic. I'd also like to suggest that they should add power attacks by simply holding on the left click.
Like over charging a bow you could overcharge a sword?
I just spent and hour typing out how this idea could be improved and simplified then I tried to delete a letter and it took me to the last page *sigh*. Whatever the basic premise is based off of the deadly combat mod for Skyrim with elements from Morrowind. basic elements were *timed blocking (the idea of blocking based on direction is a really horrible idea in my opinion no offence) *unique knockback and damage per second blocking, 5 seconds or longer blocking = 75% maximum damage per attack and 0% knockback - 1 second or less 0% maximum damage per attack 100% knockback *unique damage and speed for each direction of attack (3 types Slice - across the torso and arms - medium speed medium damage, Swing - overhead strike - low speed high damage, Stab - Self explanatory - high speed low damage). Never did figure out a place for kicking in this system because without stamina it's too easy to just spam it and we don't need more HUD elements.

Yes, that's true, but this doesn't really change that much. Still, my internet is a little slow, so I have that problem a fair bit too.
But how would you adjust the sword angle while you're not locked on?
Do you have to? It's not like you'd use it outside of combat.
But you said that the lock on would make you able to swing the sword. If you are doing that, then you can't adjust the sword angle.

You were a good section.
The current combat system is " spam left click into other guy dies " yeah , its totally fine and 100% balanced.
OT: Good idea. sorry if someone else already asked this but was this idea influenced by mount and blade?
If you want better combat, try a combat game.
