What if repeaters could sense the presence of redstone torches inside containers such as chests and dispensers, and transmit power from them? When a repeater has its input touching a container with a redstone torch in it, the repeater would receive power, simple as that.
If the torch is removed from the container (or shot out from the dispenser) the charge would go away.
It'd be pretty interesting to design devices that use moving power sources. It'd be even more interesting after the allocator is added.
