Minecraft recently implemented the end dimension, along with its first ever boss enemy, the enderdragon. Despite Minecrafts lack of a story line (as it should be), I think it can be deduced that the enderdragon is the main antagonist of the game, as it is fought in "the end" of minecraft, and defeating it causes the credits to play. I think this was a big step foreward to the game, as all RPG or adventure video games have that one enemy you work at to defeat. In Mario it is bowser, in the Legend of Zelda it is Gonandorf, in Kingdom hearts it is Ansem (or some form of him). But, what these games have that minecraft lacks is a supply of other boss enemies fought throughout your adventure.
I believe the next step Notch should take is to add in more "boss" enemies. These enemies would be specific to a certain type of biome or generated structure. The enemies would be harder then your average enemy (and rarer). Here are some ideas for these enemies I have.
Red Dragons - These could spawn in a new biome which I believe should be added, one containing high grey dead looking mountains as well as volcanoes. Red dragons could be seen flying high above the ground, attacking any pray that dare enter its precious land.
Blue Dragons - These dragons spawn in a new generated structure, dragon layers, found deep under ground, though usually beneath a mountain of some kind. This guy cannot breathe fire, but its claws are deadly.
Trolls - These guys spawn in troll caves, usually found inside of mountains. Their are three types of them. Snow, Mountain, and Fire. Snow and Mountain trolls are found inside of mountains, in their own pitch black caves where no other mob dare spawn. Snow trolls spawn in snowy mountain ranges, mountain trolls in regular mountains. Snow trolls are the more deadly of the two, as their attack will cause the player to "freeze" and slow movement for a few seconds. Snow trolls are weak to fire. Fire trolls, contrary to its two cousins, are found deep underground on "islands" surrounded by a lake of lava. These guys are the hardest, and will cause you to burn upon impact.
Giants - These guys can be found in groups of 2 - 3 around large campfires. They are neutral mobs, but will all attack you when one of them is aggravated. They are insanely hard and cause 8 hearts of damage when wearing no armor. They also have a lot of health. Killing them will have great rewards.
Blazing Ghasts - These guys are found deep within the nether, usually guarding sometype of treasure. They look like a burning ghast. They attack the same as a ghast, just with almost 1/3 of the gap between attacks as a normal ghast, as well as their fire balls create a much larger explosion and are more precise. Instead of the normal two deflected firball hits, the flaming ghast requires you to hit them with 5 of their fireballs at full health to kill.
Sharks - The antagonist of the sea. Sharks only spawn in large ocean biomes, usually in groups no larger then three, but most commonly seen by themselves. They will come up to sea level (where only their fin can be seen above water.) swim and bite you which deals 6 hearts of damage, and then swoop back under making it nearly impossible to attack them. They will also destroy your boat if you are using one.
Ghost miners - These guys can be found in abandoned mineshafts in groups up to one. They will stalk you from afar as soon as you enter their mineshaft, untill you attempt to mine something valuable from the walls of their shaft (anything other then stone, dirt or gravel) or attempt from their chests, at which point they will burst past you, causing you to be pushed back several blocks and lose 2 hearts of health. They will continue to attack in such a manner until killed. In order to kill them, one must place a "holy torch" down (made like a torch with glowstone instead of coal) which causes the ghost to avoid the torch, staying atleast 7 blocks away from the torch, but still watching you. The player must then walk to the edge of the safety zone created by the holy torch and attack the miner, who will then dissappear and attack from a different angle (still blocked by your holy torch)
Undead Creepers - These aren't so much of a boss as an easteregg type enemy. basically, every time a creeper explodes their is .8% chance it not die and instead become a grey color, at which point it becomes deadly. Basically, the undead creeper can explode an infinite number of times without dying, their explosions are the same radius and deadliness as before, only the time between "ignition" (the point at which the creeper goes "ssssssss") and explosion time is reduced by half, as well as creepers will begin to explode at 1 block further away from you then normally. They will never stop stalking you (no matter how far they are) until they die or you do. They have three times the health of a normal creeper.
Unicorn - These are a passive mob that are extremely rare. They can fly and run, and will flee when you come to close to them. If attacked, they will run faster, making them extremely hard to kill, once killed they drop a unicorn horn, which can be used to make ultimate potions. Also, they can be tamed by feeding (right clicking) them a dragon egg. Once tamed they cannot die (though they do not attack enemies) and can be ridden after one places a saddle on them. Unlike the pig, they can be controlled when riding to move in the direction you wish (using directional buttons) and to fly (spacebar) and desend (letting go of spacebar - They cannot hover)
Pirate - These guys can be found on ships floating across ocean biomes. They are passive until you get on their ships, at which point they become hostile, dealing 4 points of damage per hit. Their are usually 4-5 pirates per ship. Ships are full of all kinds of loot.
Captain - The captain of a pirate ship, 1 per ship. Will not become hostile until all other pirates are killed (or until attacked) at which point he will stop steering the ship and attack, dealing 8 points of damage per hit.
Tiger - Can be found in jungle biomes. Looks like an ocelet from afar, only much bigger (and rarer), will attack once you get near. They move fast, and deal 5 hearts of damage. If you have a cat with you, they will not attack you, but simply flee.
Squidbeast - This tentacular beast floats in the swamps of minecraft. It will reach out with one of its many (8-12) tenticles and swoop at you, causing you to fly back and lose 3 hearts of health. In order to kill it, one must first remove all its tenticals (to do so one must strike them while they are hitting them) and then attack its body.
Thief - This guy, disguised as a single block of diamond deep within cave systems will transform and attack upon being mined. (any ideas on what it looks like) its features are that of a common mob, 1 block wide and long and 2 blocks high and deals 2 hearts of damage per strike, as well as steals items from you with every strike, kill him quick before he teleports away and remains disguised as diamond ore.
Hawk - This guy can be found soaring in the sky in any biome (most common in extreme cliffs) and will only attack once attaced (with a bow). It will swoop down and deal 1 heart of damage. Very hard to kill do to its small size, and its height in the air, also very rewarding to kill.
Big foot - Found in Snow forests (taiga i believe it is called) towers slightly over trees and knocks them out of its path, targets you once it can see you (not sense you). Deals five hearts of damage. (PS, won't destroy the forest unless it is chasing you.)
So those are all of my ideas, feel free to add any of your own
Don't love the idea, since players could be devastated by these early on. Harder mobs should only be added in places you won't have to access for a while. A few of these might work for hardcore mode. Could be nice with a few changes, maybe the harder mobs only spawn in different dimensions or special biomes the players don't spawn in?

good idea. but notch did say he did not want sharks in the game, they would be too fast. also,as for ghost miners, they should have the hero-brine skin... scary.
IMO? One for abandoned mineshafts, one for strongholds, one for Nether fortresses, one for the Skylands (if it is ever implemented), and one for high-end zombie sieges (if they are ever added). No more than that, please.
How was one extra random enemy with no explanation or purpose or story or personal investment a step forward?
The dragon is not a "main antagonist". That implies some sort of plot which Minecraft does not have.
Boss mobs? Cool. Most of these...Not so cool. And quite a few are unoriginal ripoffs.
Maybe that's what the game is lacking; a story. When I think of minecraft as more than a sandbox game, I think of a new, creative, version of DnD. Spawning in a village and being given quests or tasks to perform by villagers/elders that get you along the right path instead of *spawn* "Now what do I feel like doing?" Missions like "Collect: 20 Wood, 30 Cobblestone, 5 Stone" could advance villages and you'd eventually work your way up to ruling over the hamlet in a castle that you've actively strived to build through quests. (just an example. much more variety would be an improvement)

I clearly stated that minecraft has no story... but it does mark the end of the game, which counts for something.
Also, who ever said that the first have was copying skyrim... Oh I'm sorry, your right, I forgot that Giants, trolls and dragons was an original idea came up with by Bethesda. I don't know what the hell those extremely large humanlike creatures in the hobbit were, and what that giant flying, dragon breathing beast was...
Edit... @ mafisto526... No, just no. I'm sorry, but if you want that you might as well play D&D, their is no place for that in minecraft
Red and blue dragons: No. There is already a dragon.
Giant: No. RPG element.
Undead Creeper: I dont like mobs transforming into other mobs.
While I generally agree with you, these three points don't make sense.
Red dragons are/were already planned, giants are technically IN the game,
and several mobs can already transform into other mobs. Ocelots -> Cats.

Yeah I would like it better if ocelots remain as ocelots...
Red and blue dragons: No. There is already a dragon. In a completely different dimension. Why not some in reality?
Troll: No. Minecraft is not an RPG game. If trolls can't be added, one could argue that we should ditch an entire dimension just because it houses the Enderdragon.
Giant: No. RPG element. Same as above.
Blazing Ghast: No. Bosses are not supposed to resemble other mobs. I agree on this one.
Sharks: I remember the Mojang team was against putting sharks in the game. I wouldn't mind sharks, but only as a rare mob. And, of course, Mojang is against sharks.
Ghost Miners: No. There are many mineshafts and bosses should only be one per map. Why only one per map? I could see something like the Enderdragon where it drops a ton of experience, but honestly? I was against three-per-map strongholds from when they started.
Undead Creeper: I dont like mobs transforming into other mobs. It would be annoying to the less skilled, but to be honest I agree with you for this one (for different reasons). Why should an undead creeper gain stronger abilities (besides health) of a normal creeper?
Unicorn: No. Bosses should be aggressive. Then don't think of it as a boss. Think of bosses as rare mobs with unique abilities.
Pirate: No. The ship would be big and ruin the look of oceans. Oceans need a use, besides being a mediocre transportation source and housing mushroom biomes. Besides, i've seen the ships in BetterDungeons. They house an entire crew of pirates larger than the suggested ones and don't take up much space.
Tiger: No. Bosses are not supposed to be scared of anything. I agree. The mentioned tiger could easily eat an ocelot/kitten, if it wanted to.
Squidbeast: No. Swamp waters are too shallow. Ditto.
Theif: No. Bosses dont have features of other mobs Enderdragons and Ghasts can both fly, so yes they can. Are you saying that we should remove either Enderdragons, the pinnacle of the game, or Ghasts, the terror of the Nether?
Hawk: No. It would be annoying to have a boss attacking you on your first day in your world. "It will only attack once attacked."
Bigfoot: No. It could destroy a whole biome. "It won't destroy the forest unless it's chasing you." Maybe be a little less sloppy with your combat, or don't enter a tagia until you are ready? This is a more valid argument for "it would be annoying to have a boss attacking you on your first day."
ALL OF THEM:
No. Bosses should be in separate dimensions No difficulty to the real world? Bummer.
No. Bosses should be only one in each world Say Bigfoot drops a pair of ice skates that let you move quickly on ice. You kill him and take them. Then, you fall in to a lava pit while wearing them. No more ice skates--EVER.
Wow not a single "yes" lol

As for the OP's ideas, I like the idea of bosses. I don't like most of your ideas, though. Generally uncreative and unoriginal.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Problem with ruling against the dragons thing. Notch stated he wanted to add another dragon/ more dragons besides the Enderdragon. While I'm not sure if it's intended to be tamable or a boss, they're bound to eventually be there in a later update. I still say that beating the Enderdragon should act as a Pandora's box for dragons, being both a blessing/ reward (adding a tamable dragon or two, albeit smaller than the Enderdragon and not as destructive) and a curse (adds one or two types of dragon bosses to the overworld and/ or nether). These other dragons would be a little different than the Enderdragon (namely attacking differently) and more than likely won't be nearly as destructive. (though one of them might be able to start forest fires)
As for trolls, I don't see anything wrong with them. Maybe, there could be yet more new structures, some of which have a troll somewhere in them, with an incentive to beat him, besides diamonds and other loot, like lots of XP. Also, Minecraft kind of is a RPG at this point, what with the levels, enchantments, and maybe potions. As for the Giant, I personally think giants need to be implemented as boss mobs, albeit possibly reskined, so they're not just giant zombies. Maybe, they could have some kind of earthshaking effect and maybe some destructive capabilities, namely towards weaker blocks like dirt, sand, gravel, and maybe trees. (Like Mo' Creatures ogres, they wouldn't be able to break blocks directly underneath them though.)
Also, pirate ships with sword-wielding pirate mobs (sometimes armored) and a captain boss would be awesome. They could also have a sunken ship variant, as suggested in the Shipwrecks thread, that would have a different boss, possibly with skeletal/ undead crew. I don't see what's wrong with Sharks. With permission, they could just use the Mo Creatures Shark. I don't think they're that fast. However, this would be just an animal, not a boss. It'd also work as a sea-bounded animal/ mob control (attacking everything that touches the water, except squids), but only in the oceans. (Ocean-unique animal/ mob) Crocs would be their Swamp-equivalent, except they'd have a shorter menu (no non-spider mobs or squids) and death roll stuff.
Finally, and Ghost Miners were suggested in another thread, but I don't feel they should be bosses. Instead, they're more of a scare tactic/ kill-able enemy. They would stalk the player and lash out whenever they destroyed parts of the abandoned mineshaft. They'd be afraid of/repelled with torches, but won't always steer clear of them, especially if they get more restless, in which they'll do increasingly larger amounts of damage until they kill you. I still think that would be more fitting than for them to be a boss. They could only be truly put to rest with a golden sword. (They'll respawn sometime later if not killed with one.) Oh, and they don't always spawn in abandoned mineshafts. It'd just be an occasional occurrence.

"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
I would make the trolls shoot blaze fireballs disguised as diamonds, then if it kills you it will travel to a random block within 6 blocks of your bed and clear all items from nearby chests. When it does that the message "umad?" should appear. If it is killed after this it drops all the stolen items. :tongue.gif:
