(Note: Read it all please, Vanilla players would not be restricted from Expanded Servers. You'd log into the server as a Basic Player and would just be unable to access expanded items, everything else would be as normal. Example; If they can fly a dragon on a medieval expanded server you could see them but be unable to fly without the expansion)
So this idea is for Minecraft to add expansions to their game. The game as it is would be considered the basic vanilla version. Expansions would be basically Mods made by Mojang and implemented easier into the game allowing players to pick favored themes over others for SP, and for supporting servers.
There could be many many different expansions depending on what people want. For example say you have the Modern War Expansion and log into a Farmer Expansion server. You cannot use or craft your expansion items in this server, or access Farmer expansion items. It would read your account as a basic vanilla so you'd get what we have now. If you logged into a Modern War Expansion server you could access all your recipes, items and such from your expansion here.
If you stack expansions you get more options on different servers. In single player when you start a world it will give you a toggle to choose which expansion you want to open the world with, if you open it with farming you'll start off with the farming implements the farmer expansion comes with. But if you start off with the medieval adventure expansion you will start off that way.
Some expansions would have story modes you can go through, like having to build a kingdom and conquer neighboring kingdoms, or having to defeat a super villain. There are many different scenarios depending on the expansion you get but there would basically be something for everyone.
Example Expansions
Medieval Adventure Expansion (Magic, More Alchemy, More Mythical Creatures, Adventure Quests)
Modern War Expansion (modern military weapons bombs tanks and everything you warmongers want)
SciFi Expansion (Space Travel, Aliens, Different Planets, Futuristic Weaponry etc)
Super Expansion (Super Powers, Heroes, Villains)
Farming Expansion (More Farming, More Animals, More Food Items, More Crops)
Mojang could charge small fees for the expansions to keep them updating along with the basic vanilla minecraft since they'd probably have to hire more people to manage each expansion. These are basically built in optional mods that I think would satisfy many people who want guns, flying dragons or space travel, all they'd have to do is buy the expansion they prefer and look for a server that hosts that expansion. And even if you never bought an expansion you could join any of those servers and just be limited in comparison unless someone modded a cheat to get the expansions which I dont think Mojang would much case as they are just selling the easy option with toggling options.
P.S
You would not need the expansion to host an expansion server, but when playing you'd be limited to your basic items if you did not have the expansion, like any other basic player.
AND
You'd have the expansions applied to your minecraft account, it is not downloadable content add-ons really it is already part of your account, so if you play in offline mode you could probably access the expansions that way as you can play minecraft free in offline mode on SP as it is. This would also give people a chance to test the expansions to see if they want to be able to use it in SMP online.
I have enough trouble as it is finding a nice, friendly server to have a nice time playing. If most of them were for expanded versions, I think I might cry.

you'd still be able to play on expansion servers but you be limited to the basic items like swords and armor you have already, you wouldnt be able to get the special items or interact with expansion creatures much is all.
Eh, I don't think this is a good idea. I would not like Mojang selling game content.
Eventually their sales with the basic game will peak and they'll start losing money when everyone that wants to play will already have accounts, expansions would be completely optional game content and wouldnt limit you from joining any servers. You'd just not be able to access the expansion content on the server.
Plus people would probably just mod/hack the content and only those who want the easy access would pay the small fees for the expansion keeping things somewhat afloat. Expansions would just be around 1-5 dollars. Very cheap as they are just add-ons to the game.
No. Mods are good enough. I don't want to spend more money on some xxxx. Vanilla is good enough anyway.
Vanilla would still remain the same, expansions are optional if you read through the entire post you'd see that. If you didnt want to get bonus content you'd stick to the basic vanilla, and just not able to access expansion content on expansion servers, you'd be playing vanilla on an expansion server basically.

But somebody could use those items on you? You could see the mobs, just not be hit by them? No. Also, impossible, much? You would need all the clientside code for the expands just to go on a server with one and not crash when you saw a expansion weapon. So I would just go in and set the flag to true, if that was what nojeb did.
Also, what if somebody just gives you the item? If it changed world generation, you would just get the ore and not be able to do anything? No support at all. But we do need modding support.

If someone gave you the item in an expanded server then it would be like carrying a useless block around unless you gave it to someone who could use it. The expansion itself would just be part of minecraft, you could just go in and change it so you could use the expansion yes, but there are many many people who dont even want to mess with mods because they do not wants to mess with all the files and modifying the game to get it to work. The Expansions would just be an already implemented mod, if it is active on your account when you log into a SMP that supports that expansion it will give you permission to use expansion items and their mobs.
If a vanilla basic account attacked an expansion mob the person can interact but it would be useless as any item it drops is worthless and cannot be used by the basic account.
Its just an idea, things probably need to be changed thats why I suggested it, suggestions are posted up so people can nitpick and try to improve it. Expansions would give different groups something they want without ruining the game for everyone, people can just follow with what they want, be it basic vanilla, modern military with guns, or storymode and medieval themed quests and magic.
Really expansions could even just be part of the game no charge but I doubt that would happen as it would require a lot of work and minecraft sale will peak at some point.
