I was thinking about what materials would be best to make tools out of and I think that Obsidian and Lapus Zuzuli would be best. Due to the fact that Obsidian has the highest blast resistance out of any material in the game.
**All Obsidian Tools and Armor would not be destroyed if they were to fall in lava, instead they would float on top of the lava.**
Obsidian Tools would have 3.5 times to uses of diamond.
Obsidian Picks would have the ability to turn Obsidian Blocks back in to lava for easy carrying purposes.
Obsidian Picks would also be able to mine anything a diamond pick could but 2x as fast.
Obsidian Swords would have more damage and usages but enchantments either wouldn't work or would not be obtainable until higher levels.
Obsidian Shovels would be 2x as fast as a dimond shovel.
Obsidian Axes would deal the same damage against mobs as an Obsidian Sword and could chop wood 2x as fast as a Diamond Axe would.
Obsidian Armor would serve 2x the amount of protection of diamond armor and would also not be affected by explosions. Obsidian Armor also would highly reduce the amount of fire damage and lava damage, Lava damage would stop instantly after exiting the pool of lava, Same goes for fire.
What do you guys think? Would this be a good idea or is it taking it to close to invinciblity?
If there were ever to be obsidian tools, they could NOT have higher duraiblity than diamonds. Obsidian may be slow to mine, but it is extremely easy to reproduce. Obsidian is a ****TON easier to locate than diamonds.
Here is something less overpowered: They would have a durability of somewhere between stone and iron, and the mining speed of gold, as well as a high enchantability. They could mine any material as well (well, other than bedrock of course). Obsidian swords would deal the same damage as an iron sword (because volcanic glass is sharp).
I don't know obsidian armor could work, if even at all.

No, they would have to be more durable than diamond, but slower to mine (or whatever) with. Obsidian anything should be super durable, but not as good in other ways as other materials. That would be the only way it would make sense, I think.
New tools out of existing materials? No. New tool/ armor set from a new ore? (not several, one) Yes. This would be the iron-diamond gap though, no need for a tier that exceeds diamond. That's just silly. All the more reason to not support this idea. Nothing should exceed diamond.
"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
Why does everyone focus on obsidian/lapis stuff when the real focus should be on flint and bone tools? If you look at the tools, most are at least somewhat focused on trying to be realistic... and flint and bone things were used long before iron, and that came after bronze, which isn't in vanilla Minecraft.

Hmm.. I guess if anything we already got needs a tool tier, it's flint. I really don't care much for bone tools. What would they be? Between wood and stone? Not a big enough gap. What about flint? Would it be stronger than stone or weaker than? If it's the later, then I'm against that to. (especially since I often have enough trouble gathering it for arrows already) I'm not sure on my history of tools, nor do I feel like googling it right now. If it's stronger than stone, then maybe we could have it, but I'd prefer one more tool tier and that is the iron-diamond bridge. Honestly though, I'm leaning more towards a new ore where the tools are either useless or nonexistant, but the armor fills the gap. Why should every armor/ tool type ore produce both tools and armor anyways?
