I believe in some beta version of Minecraft, maybe 1.6, they nerfed the flying distance of minecarts severely. They need to undo this. I'm sure most people have already tried having rollercoasters and escape pods where minecarts fly off the tracks and land onto some other tracks.
However, the minecarts always fall short, and the player usually dies. For example, my friend and I had neighboring forts for some kind of team tower war thing we were doing on our survival server. I tried to make a track that would launch us from his tower to mine over a small gap so that we land in water and escape. I had to really extend it so that it would even hit the target because the minecart falls soooo quickly.
Even worse, even when I landed in 2-block deep water in a minecart, I died instantly. They need to also make it so players don't take fall damage in minecarts or at least don't take as much. Also, it seems as though water does not dampen the fall at all.
It would be way more fun and useful if they made minecarts fly further and protect the players more from fall damage.

Basically if the last block before a drop off is soul sand the minecart will travel further through the air. The reason for this is because carts drop of the rail on to the block the rail is on which slows it down, soulsand is better because it is not a full block tall so the carts hits the soulsand less than it would other blocks meaning it slows down much less.
