I think you should be able to place gunpowder the same way you place redstone. It can be activated with a redstone signal but sets nearby blocks on fire and is destroyed when activated. It can also be activated with flint and steel, lava, and anything else that sets things on fire. Lighting gunpowder trails burn the lit block; then the fire spreads very quickly to other blocks of gunpowder on the ground. It makes a very small explosion when burned, not enough to damage blocks, but enough to cause half a heart of damage to the player and mobs.
Possible applications include remotely setting fires, acting as a fuse for TNT so you don't need redstone to prime it when you want it lit, mob traps, and demolition. I realize its capabilities to start fires can be used for griefing, so maybe make it only placeable in singleplayer.

If anyone wants to port/remake this, feel free to do that! Or don't. It's up to you, really.
The gunpowder trails could only be used when gunpowder is placed at the bottom of the inventory, like, if you place a material like sand and gunpowder at the bottom of the backpack, it will fall out when you use a small backpack, which the Steve is obviously using, because you cant see it.
When the trail is made, it looks like black redstone, and is all connecting together, giving it the trail look.
You read my mind about the appearance of gunpowder on the ground. It should reuse the redstone textures but instead of tinting it varying shades of red, it would be dark gray.
