No way in hell can any current Smartphone play Minecraft. Not even the DellMoble coming out this year can do it, with the RAM it has, and maybe the CPU is a bit too slow for Minecraft.
Just bring a damn Laptop with you, damn hipster kids.

You insulting my fabulous Snapdragon CPU there?! T'is filled with a 1000 hertzes of deliciousness, so Minecraft should love it. Make love to it. Or perhaps not. Disregard that.
Whoa, guys. The reason Minecraft won't run on your netbook isn't because of just the fact that it's got the slow processor, but because it has a slow processor AND isn't made for slow processors. If Minecraft was ported to the android, then it would be optimized for efficiency on the android, so bringing netbooks up is kinda irrelevant. When you port a game, you don't keep the same exact engine, you modify it to fit the new platform.

Oh heavens no, it's just I hear 1Ghz isn't the best for Minecraft. I was saying Minecraft is too demanding, not Snapdragon isn't good enough. Although if Notch somehow makes it less demanding then I'm sure it would run it well.
1. Stop even attempting to run 3D games on portable devices, it just DOES NOT WORK. Minecraft is exceedingly demanding on RAM and very demanding on GPU (Something which any portable device is bad at)
To be honest it would run better on a PSP if someone modded it to run windows 95/98 because the PSP is designed for video games and happens to be very good at them.
Also, I dont think you can even get android phones in the UK yet. More nice shiny technology I will never own.
Excuse me? Have you seen the Zombie Nazis game on the iPhone? That game has graphics on par with the PS1.
I don't think smart phones can hold a candle to this game. A mobile port seems out of the question right now unless you want a really shitty version with less than half of the features.
It looks like a lot of people don't understand how computers work.
That's ok, I can explain the mistakes.

The droid has a 550mHz processor and 256MB of ram.
The iphone 3g has a 600mHz processor and 256MB of ram.
Netbooks typically have more than that.
Both of those phones use the ARM Cortex v8.
Netbooks almost exclusively use the Intel Atom chip.
These are different architectures, so comparing them based on CPU frequency is like comparing a car's engine to a large ship's engine; it's not how short the cycle length is so much as it is how much work can be done in the same length of time.
I'm not saying that ARM chips are better for the task, but it's worth noting that almost all Sony and Nintendo consoles have used ARM chips.
Beyond that, netbooks have a rather thick OS running on them. Phone OSes tend to be MUCH slimmer and lower-impact.

I guess you could have fun on a 16^3 map (the way minecraft is currently).
Minecraft maps are in the ballpark of 128^3.

Yes, nobody should try to play 3D games on the DS or PSP. That's just silly.

That's highly infeasible. W9X runs on the X86 architecture.
Also, the PSP has 64mb of RAM (32mb for the 1000s), and is only clocked at 333mhz.

Actually, i have quite a few 3D games running on my Desire already. One of them is , which actually looks very good. So yeah, i think it can be done quite well.

Someone has already done that using a X86 emulator.
Yes, and using an X86 emulator is horribly slow. If I recall correctly it took nearly two days to boot; running W9X on a PSP is very impractical. Running Minecraft on top of that is what is infeasible.
Porting MC to PSP and compiling it for CTM use would be orders of magnitude more sensible, but then we run into the hardware limitations.

That is what I am on about. You have to remember that although it has lower specs it is designed almost specifically for playing games. The IPhone is designed not just for games but for other things as well.
Being designed for gaming does absolutely nothing to counter the fact that it has neither RAM or CPU power MC requires to function. Also, I should probably let you know that being designed for gaming in this context mostly just means a proportionally more powerful video chip and a gaming-centric control scheme on the hardware side, and a thin OS on the software side.
In short? The PSP is not capable of running MC. Some phones are capable, albeit with poor controls and questionable performance.
Hey, just going to jump in this thread, but I can play quake 3 arena on my htc desire, aka G2, over 3g network, or hpsa+, no lag what so ever, graphics are smooth and servers work well, and phones are only getting powerfuler.
Android is based on java, with minor difrences that are easy to fix.
Minecraft is in java.
Nuff said, it just needs to be ported, sure, old smartphones wont run it, but new ones will, so some one should make it.

I post too much.

Let's focus on getting a legitimate stand-alone client for our PCs before we even think about porting anywhere.
