I've seen some people put a particle emitter under a wooden pressure plate and shoot arrows at it. The particle thing will likely be patched either to be arrow activated always or not at all.
What we need is a wall or ceiling mounted switch that activates when either something presses against it or it is hit with an arrow or anything that is thrown. (egg, snowball) Maybe even have any entity that touches it activate it. (any block drop) It would be made by combining a wooden pressure plate and a button. The switch could also be placed on the floor like a pressure plate. Maybe I'm thinking too hard. Maybe it would be easier to change the pressure plates to be affected by arrows and make them place-able on walls and ceilings.

Yes. At this time, a wooden pressure plate will only be activated by an arrow if there are particles passing through it. Smoke from a torch or fire is a particle effect.
perhap just allow wood presure plates on walls? then let them be affected by siad objects.
I figured that maybe if it was its own block, it could have its own texture. Maybe like a target painted on it. It wouldn't help much, though, in the way of stealth. Someone would see it and know where it was to hit it. However, if the target is meant to be seen, one would want it to be clearly visible. It could go either way.
Read the first post, please. I said "target switch" as in hitting it with something to activate it. A button would be too unnoticeable and small to work effectively. This target plate would be made with a button and a pressure plate combined in the crafting grid.

Yes, but that only works once and then it must be reset.
