I suggest a new mob called a demon. They spawn semi-rarely below level 20, and more commonly, and up to level 40 when they are within 32 blocks of a portal block. They are fast moving, and do about the same damage as zombies. The demons are slightly taller than 1 block, making them hard to hit. The main use of these is that they drop 1-5 soul fragments.
Soul Fragment- 8 of these crafted in a circle will create a soul orb.
Soul Orb- These can be put above an awkward potion to create Bottles of Enchanting, and possibly upgraded further with glowstone/redstone. The soul orbs will also store 50 xp points when they are right-clicked. Five can be crafted together to create a large one that stores 250 xp points. When a full soul orb is dropped with Q, they drop the xp orbs on the ground. This is an efficient way to store xp and to trade it on SMP.

Decent idea?
It sounds useful,my only complaint that may have to be excluded is how they spawn quicker in the range of a Nether Portal block. Some of us,me included, like to build Nether Portals beside our houses for quick transport to the Nether, and it would just be a pain in the ass to fight off demons with a charging bow and a newbie sword such as a wooden sword.
But personally, I'd rather have the rare enderman drop be the item used to brew the Exp. potions.
Zombies drop iron stuff, creepers drop.. other iron stuff I think and skeletons drop bows with possible enchantments. These are fairly rare occurrences, so unless you went to the end and farmed the endermen for a few hours, I don't think it would be overpowered.

I know this is kindov unrelated to the main subject, but Creepers actully extremely rarely drop green music disks.
