A new mode Notch could eventually add after Survival, Creative, and Dungeons & Levers, or if Notch really wants to push it, possibly add this to Creative.
Like Sandbox, all you do is play around. You are given new angles at blocks, e.g. sand explodes into particles and slows your cart down upon colliding, cloth has lots of friction, etc. You design a course out of half-sized track blocks that you are able to rotate. You place a cart for you to hop in. There is a start and stop block, along with other things like switchable paths borrowed from Dungeons & Levers. You are sent to your spawn 5 seconds after your cart wipes out and a new cart spawns at the start block. You can create jumps, ramps, high hills, loops, and other crazy stunts. Multiplayer would allow you to work with a friend to design a course or create races, complete with finish lines and carts with different flags.
Highly doubt Notch would do this, considering that he would have to create an entirely new control scheme for the cart and add to the game's (currently limited) physics, but if it were to exist, this would definitely be enjoyable.

Just use a button to go into the cart, then use normal controls.

Not exactly. Assuming the WASD or arrow keys are used for driving the cart, the A and D / left and right arrow controls would have to be redesigned to cause gradual turning to the left and right instead of side strafing. Also, the forward/backward controls would likely have to be altered to include a brief period of gradual acceleration before the cart reaches its maximum speed, since the vehicle couldn’t just instantly start and stop like the player can in standard gameplay. I wouldn't know since I have basically no programming experience, but those seem like significant alterations.
Plus, the physics dealing with collisions would likely have to be greatly refined for the cart to run (and run into obstacles) smoothly.
HELLO, this is a MINECART, it runs on tracks! If it uses tracks A and D are totally out of the question, that is except for turns when it would register if your holding A or D down when it passes. If it does register A or D being pushed then you turn, if not you don't

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.

This is if you want it like club penguin. W speed up, S slow down, SPACE emergency brake.
Slopes being the main problem with minecarts, I think they should just stay level, cutting out the terrain to make a working minecart path would be cool. If you need to get resources from one tier to the next, you just get to the cart and put the stuff in one at a higher level. Or maybe it throws the items out at the end of its path.

Any other ideas/questions?

Ok, I admit that it was rather idiotic of me, please ignore my previous comment. :tongue.gif:
But IMO this game mode still would take considerably longer to develop than any foot-based mode.

Especially because it is not even on his todo list, yet.
