Ok so, I know what you are thinking. But hear this idea out.
What I suggest is some sort of "force", that would absorb one instance of damage. After that, it would take time to recharge, and then it would protect you again. This initial absorbed damage would not affect your armor's durability!
How? This could be something like a "enchanted amulet" left in your inventory, or some sort of magic necklace you make on a crafting table, etc.
The effect would be:
-if you are using it (it is equipped/ in your inventory/ etc) and you are hit...
-the first damage doesn't affect you, but your shielding dissipates (no durability lost to tool either)
-it now starts recharging, during which you are vulnerable
*optional affect*
-if you are hit, with damage that would otherwise kill you, the amulet takes the damage (or has a chance to take the damage) instead to its durability, thus saving your life. It keeps doing this until it breaks. If it does, then you die.
This would be a real luxury item, and would help protect you form death. What do you think? Too OP? What would you do to balance it?
Could be interesting, but it would have to be very hard to obtain (Minecraft's easy enough as is).

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
