The Idea: When the player crafts a tool it pops up with a menu saying would you like to customise, if the player does not choose to customize then it exits the customize and the player will continue as normal. However if the player decides to choose to customise it pops up with something that a person would use to create sprites for minecraft and allows the player to customize their weapons look to the players liking.
Extra Details: IF you were to add ores to the game and you mine it out (such as a green ore)the player will have to smelt the ore to receive an green coloured ingot. The player can then transfer this ingot into pixels or something just by putting it into the players crafting area. After this the player can then edit the sword with these pixels but not only does it make it customizable but the green pixels can also add health drain (for example) and other effects that are obvious to the colour such as red (gives sword fire aspect) and so on.

EDIT: maybe a custom sword table would be nice :biggrin.gif:
I also just uploaded a video about this idea check it out here:
I see no point to this. If you want different swords, just edit the textures. Also, there are already enchantments; adding another way or changing the method for applying effects would be stupid.

It sounds good, but that would take a long time to make, and not everyone would use it, as it takes too much time to mine the colored ore, smelt it down, then put it into crafting.
Also, a new window? Do you mean outside the minecraft window, or do you mean like when you enter a chest/furnace/crafting table?
Like a Crafting table menu and thanks for the feedback and i didn't expect so many people in so little time :tongue.gif:
Mojang could make many sprites for colorful swords, but the status of the Sword would be retained.
Example: You paint an Iron Sword green. When you hover your mouse over your green Iron sword, it wouldn't say 'Green Iron Sword'. It would say just 'Iron Sword'. This would make it easier for Mojang. This could also work with armors. But only for Iron, Diamond and Gold. Leather, Wood and Stone would not be paint-able.
i like actully
how about instead of making it stronger (we have enchantments) it just affects the look. so you could have golden handles or a schimiter type sword which has no aspect apart from eye-candy.
i think this would be a nice SMP addition
I realise we have enchantments to get our weapons more powerful but for me i wanted to make it more customisable so everyone can have different damage like frost for example slows the enemy down while the people with dps (damage per second) can take out the mob. (For SMP)
Great idea, maybe there could be some sort of sword crafting table where you upgrade it. And i love the idea of getting ores which could be smelted into pixels.
Perhaps a simple multi-sprited system? You create your sword, and it randomly chooses between three or four aesthetically different models. This way, you could have a rapier or an arming sword without having to make a whole new weapon. It would display for other players as well, making wars potentially more interesting.

Interesting idea, but I don't' think this is something Minecraft needs. Your customization or uniqueness is displayed in what you build and your skin, we don't need sword or tool modifications.

Exept you would need to use DYES.

A sword crafting table what a great idea! Thanks!
...But that's just my opinion.
