OK, so recently Notch added a feature so oak trees would have a 1/200 chance of dropping apples. That's just oak trees. Why not have a different thing than wood and leaves that pine and birch drop? This question leads me to the ideas I had.
Pine trees should be able to either be tapped or drop sap, which can be put into the furnace to make maple syrup. This can either be eaten pure, which heals a heart, or crafted with bread: =maple syrup =bread
to make pancakes, which heal 5 hearts of health.
Birch trees should be able to be de-barked with shears which drops birch bark. If the tree is cut down after it is de-barked, it will drop wooden planks. Birch bark can be put on the side of blocks, just like signs, but it shouldn't be able to be stood up on a stick. It will share the shape of a map, but it's kind of a beige-ish white with black lines. (This has nothing to do with trees, but I think maps should be hung on walls as well.) Birch bark, once on walls, can be written on IF the player has ink in their inventory.
Summing all of this up, pine drops sap, sap makes maple syrup, maple syrup and bread makes pancakes. Shearing birch drops bark, bark can be written on and put on walls.
