I might not use it, but I can see that it would be great for some people. I'd like it to be optional though.
Easiest way would be to have it client-side with the alternate texture files in one particular folder. You then select in the options screen which alternate texture files the game should choose from when deciding the random texture for a block.
But to save memory there should be a limit on how many block textures can be loaded at once. 8 at most. More realistically, 6 or even 4. That would be enough to give some randomness without clogging up RAM space.
Hey Guys. Quick question. I followed this tutorial exactly, but in game the block that is supposed to be changed is white with a black dot on the bottom. Help please.

You sure you have your optifine and mcpatcher installed?
could you somehow upload your ctm folder files to [email protected] so I can check?
While a good concept, i'm kind of skeptical about how this would work. Correct me if I'm wrong, but depending on how this would be implemented, it could cause some serious tiling issues that would make every famous texture artist shake their fist at the sky. If you have say a stack of cobblestone, would it be completely random which block it would place down (say, the first 3 placed chooses "cobble 1" while the next one out of chance chooses "cobblestone 3")?
Maybe I'm thinking too narrow minded. I'm just gonna vote for a maybe until someone can disprove me otherwise. Once again though, great concept and idea, just slightly concerned about the after affects.
Maybe a map editor make you can choose between block A type 1 and block A type 2
I like this idea. It adds variation and makes the terrain look a bit less repetitive. The obvious issue is the hassle it brings to texturepack makers but like you said they could just overlap it all to the same textures or work with it to create slight variations of their own textures to fit.
^ This sort of thing is already possible with random mob textures and pack makers seem to have taken very well to designing multiple textures for a single mob type, I see no reason why terrain textures can't share in this glory
HEY RED TEXT IMPORTANT TO OWNER OF THREADIMPORTANT STUFF SINCE IT'S BIG RED TEXT
Dinnerbone has revamped the texture format. Each texture will have an individual file come 1.5, instead of all of them being located in Terrain.png. It could help your case to update your thread to match this new format. Perhaps instead of terrain1.png and terrain2.png there could be separate folders for each block/face, like Diamond_Ore. Inside them would be the different diamond ore textures: Diamond_Ore, Diamond_Ore1, Diamond_Ore2, etc
I think this could be better added as a mod, just if this could affect framerate or performance of the game, I agree that it could make the game look better but it doesn´t convince me, sorry not support

OH SHUT UP, so many people complaining about lag who talk out of their asses. This is an excellent idea, and if you think it would cause lag, then don't say it would be better as a mod. Things better as a mod are for jetpacks and nukes and stuff like that. If you people actually put some thought beyond just saying it would lag, you would figure out some way to turn it off in-game like my Aesthetic Particle Mobs idea.
Little grass chunks on gravel, rougher and smoother chunks.
Some random wood planks, very neat!
Rare dirt chunks on stone blocks highlighted here:

4:1
4:2
etc..

Plants and ores look weird at the moment, this idea aims to improve that and make them look normal, not weird again.

Phew, I has relieved now.
Trust me, I know how it should be.
