This would definatley make the game a lot less repetative in looks and brighten up the game. Really hope that this gets added to Vanilla as an option, but even if they don't this would be a great addition to MCpatcher and Optifine.
Definite yes to this one, with limited randomized blocks at least. The more artificially created blocks, like planks, bricks, and wool should be perfectly uniform to show quality in big buildings. The natural blocks (including cobble as it's not only made by lava naturally, but irregular even when hand-placed) should have at least two or three variations which line up at the edges.
My second vote was for optional, but I'm coming around to "base feature" agreement. The people most offended by it could get replacement texture packs that take away the variety.
Well in theory this could work WITHOUT increasing the data stored. You could use a random int to selet a terrain file (1, 2, 3) and store that somewhat like wood. or edit the exisiting terrain file and use the same concept. Either way it may or may not work because the random int gen might run every time you load a chunk
Now, I don't support this. If this was implemented, the first thing I'd do is delete every number terrain over 2, and copypaste over 1...I'm extremely obsessive. Not OCD (I don't think!) and would like everything to be 100% on-par.

So Do That. It'll Probably Be Easy To Edit If The Implement It. Just Because You Have To Do A Little Manuel Work Does Not Mean You Shouldn't Support This.....
I support this, despite being OCD about symmetry. There is one thing I would like you to consider, though.
This should not apply to any man-made blocks. Any block that is crafted, with the exception of Cobblestone Stairs/Slabs, Sandstone Stairs/Slabs, Hieroglyphic Sandstone, Sandstone, Clay Blocks, Snow Blocks, and Bookshelves, should not have random textures.

I usually just lurk around, but when I do post...
Trust me, I know how it should be.
My current texture pack utilizes CTM very heavily, so this is already a reality for me. However, it should be a setting in vanilla Minecraft, as staring at thousands of equally-sized cubes is bad enough. Some variety is needed. SMP has spoiled me, it would seem.

yes yes, sad about it in the OP. Bookshelves never have same books placed in same places in every shelve and so on, your point is right. Only blocks such as crafting bench, enchantment table or jukebox deserve to be similar.
I really like the idea of this, but if this was implemented I would want an option to turn random textures off. As many people have mentioned this may affect builds, but with the new server-wide textures server owners could turn random textures on or off for the entire server. This is a great idea though, /signed
The Idea Seems To be Going Great. This Idea Could Really Help Modders Too, So They Also Get A Nice Variety. The Turn Off Feature Is Really Sparking. Also, For Those Players Who Think It Might Lag By Adding New Things, Mojang Could Easily Split The Texture In Random Pieces, Having The World Generate Blocks With The Pieces In Different Order. That's The Easy Way Though. If This Was Implemented, I Think Mojang Would Work Much Harder On It. I'm Just Anxious To See What Happens When The Big Guys Have Made Their Decision.
So far I have seen 3 texture packs that have random textures with MCP's connected textures. Sphaxcraft x128, Misa and Better than Default. They all look pretty good and I'll get back to you all when I've figured it out.

also seen SMPs-Revival pack with it. I don't get how connected textures manage to randomize things though.
