When you were a newb and you just bought the game, did you instantly read the wiki for Crafting? I certainly did. It led me to reading the wiki 5 times over. ;O; Sometimes I just forget how to craft something and it's so annoying to go directly to the wiki. Sometimes, I wonder why we can't have a crafting guide right on our own Workbenches?
This idea is in-depth, unlike what many other threads have done. If you flame me without reasoning, you'll be ignored.
Crafter's Workbench
It's a simple block. It functions exactly like a workbench or crafting table. On it, you have a 3x3 grid for crafting almost everything you have. The difference is that it would have a small book next to it, and this book shows a crafting recipe and description of any already made or unlocked tools. (more details on that further on) The GUI would appear like this: (it's crude.. need a better one, perhaps with an actual book?)
The crafting recipe would be simpler and can be done in a 2x2 grid. It would be a book on a workbench: (bookshelf is book)
As you can see, it's simply a book lying on your workbench. The block itself would have a 3-D book model like the Enchantment Table, but this book wouldn't open up to you and act like all that magical stuff.
Unlocking System
Anyway, we have some problem. Wouldn't it be OP to suddenly know every single recipe in the game? Well, we need some sort of way to unlock your recipes, but not make it impossible to start out.
Every item that is crafted will be added to your crafting book as a recipe. This does NOT mean you can't craft until your book has the item in it. It merely means you have the recipe in the book. For realism, people experiment with what they have to make other things.
You can also use experience levels to learn new tools with what you have. For example, putting wooden planks in your crafting grid would show another button that says "Experiment" Click it and for some amount of levels, an item is added to your crafting book.
I'm not sure about above, so we can also use achievements to unlock a wide array of items. Benchmarking should unlock all wooden tools, for example.
Extra Notes:
When I say "unlock" I simply mean this can be viewed in your crafting book. This does NOT mean it can't be crafted.
The crafting book itself is just a view of recipes you have seen.
Levels to unlock = putting a random iron pickaxe from a zombie will add iron ingots if you experiment.
This book isn't necessary, you can still use the wiki. It's meant for new players or people who forgot how to craft something.
The recipe includes every single way to get this, down to the beginning. Iron ingots for example, will show "smelted from iron ore in a furnace" The word furnace when clicked will go to the furnace recipe or ask you to experiment.
The GUI shown may be confusing. Where the tools are, that's simply your recipe list. You don't get free items at all.

This sounds like a useful idea.
Even I'd use it; almost a year into the game and I still forget how to craft things like pistons and redstone repeaters.

How would modifying the mod help? I can't code for life, either.
Someone get's it. :smile.gif:
