Whenever there is a new snapshot, I immediately download it, and many of the servers I play on don't. This confines me to single player until the next full release. I'm sure other people have this problem too. If snapshot clients had backwards compatibility with the latest full release server, this problem wouldn't exist.
Edit:
For example, it would be possible to play on a 1.1 server with the 12w06a jar.
When you download the snapshot, rename the last official release to something like "minecraft1.1" and just leave it in the folder. Then all you have to do is rename the one you want to use as "minecraft".
My bad I've been reading it in the wrong way, I get what you are trying to say. But I still think since they're only snapshots they wouldn't bother. It would be nice if it did even though I don't play SMP.
this would be so hard to code. when they update mincraft they change alot of files. backwards compatablity is not possible to much code and it probly would not work. however it might be possible to make the snapshoots more moddular. not make them backwards compatible but if they were made modular then. it might be possible to safe guard your old worlds and you migh be able to change versions as easily as texture packs.

Since they're only snapshots, I don't see them adding something like that.
