Rather than immediately give the player equal access to the entire overworld on initial spawn, why not invent tougher mobs that exclusively spawn at set heights? This would give a little more depth to the overworld in that the player must work a little bit more to reach other dimensions and better loots. For example, bears can spawn at high levels. Bears are hostile creatures that have tons of health and damage, but are slow and loud. They drop the same as a cow, but double the amount. Bears can spawn during the day. On the other hand, dead miners spawn at low levels. They throw small bombs at the player that do high damage and destroys one or two blocks. They can spawn at any time of day and can spawn in higher light levels. This would be a simple idea that adds depth and difficulty to the overworld without adding too much clutter, which is why I want it.
Problem is, while it's easy to limit where mob spawns (see slimes and endermen), there is nothing in the game to prevent mobs from straying too far f their spawn points. So you could end up with strong bears wandering down the mountains... It also imposes a limit on a game that is essentially supposed to be the ultimate sandbox game... So this will be a no for me.
Well, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard to code in territorial tendencies. I'm no coder, but I'd imagine it would be easy to make certain mobs constantly try to reach their designated height if they wander away. Also, with the game as it is, there's already plenty of progression built in. I've had games that I'd play for like a Minecraft month without having access to the nether. It's inaccessible without diamonds, iron, AND obsidian. The same and more goes for enchanting. There are limits already imposed.
It's not the coding, it's the fact that you're taking an axe to the "SANDBOX" part of the game, and turning it into a Box Game.
Not Xbox, Box.
I don't support this because if X bears spawn, then wouldn't 1/4 X probably stray further than their original area? What if Y (being Demoman Miners) strays WITH the bears? Y and X easily overpower you.
I'll be honest, then. Just to get this off my chest. I don't really understand why people are insistent on keeping survival mode as part of the sandbox element. I see the sandbox part as being creative. With survival, even with the player progression, you keep much of the same elements, but add a thrill to it. I thought that creative mode was the time when you could just play with the digital Lego set, and survival was when the Lego set came alive. What's the appeal of keeping the amount of difficulty and player progression low? I'm not trying to undermine y'all's point, but I just don't get it.

I don't doubt it is possible to code territorial behaviors for mob, and in fact, it might actually make sense to do so (barnyard animals in the depth of caves anyone?), but I still feel this sort of limitation goes against the spirit of the game. Sure, there are already limitations in the game depending on your luck and/or ability to find certain material, but such limitations does not feel imposed. Using your suggestion, we may end up having our diamonds and most of our obsidian guarded by stronger mobs, requiring enchanted iron armor and weapons to get them in the first place, thus delaying our trip to the nether even more... I guess this certainly sounds found, and makes a good idea for a mod or hardcore difficulty level, it goes a bit against the basic "limited only by your imagination" feel the game has.
