For some reason, this thread gave me an idea; how about allowing players to craft spawners?
A quick idea of the crafting recipe would be a block of with a mob drop in the middle for each type of mob spawner.
Ex: for creepers or bone for skeletons for zombies (wink at the old zombie drop and so rotten flesh can be used for zombie pigman spawner)
Silk or spider eye for spiders. for pigs...
And it seems a bit too easy to use for minging, seeing as Creepers are severely underpowered now, as you can just critical it with a bow and arrow for free gunpowder. I once got some on Day 1 by beating it with a stick.
So if this was implemented, MC would become GriefCraft.
If ever the game allows you to obtain spawners, it should be from using silk touch on a pre-existing one in a dungeon. Plus it might actually make players want to obtain that enchantment.
- Make Creeper spawner.
- Place it near someone's house.
or
- Make and place Skeleton spawner near house and make trap around it.
- Enjoy infinite supply of bones and arrows.
Yeah, I don't see this ever existing. I narrowed my eyes in confusion when I saw the posts that were suggesting how to "balance" this. It's easy to make traps for spawners you find in dungeons, so being able to craft them and place them where you want is eons above being simply overpowered. No support.

Edit: seems I messed up my link...

I don't think it should be in vanilla, but I think the recipe I just said would fit well with Equivalent Exchange.
Maybe something along the line of
