I figure, if Minecraft is going to be all medieval like, why not have some other, non-undead creatures?
My first thought was Orcs. They'd be quite large, and carry a big club. Shooting them in the head would deal extra damage. (This should really be done for all mobs, but I digress)
Next I thought about goblins. Slightly smaller, and they would carry small slings. This would also mean that after killing them, you could pick up the sling to use as a secondary weapon, if you ran out of arrows.
Good ideas. I think that there should also be enemy Knights or something, so that there are three sides - you, the main baddies, and evil knights or something. Knights would be stronger, and only have one or two on the map at a time. They would be able to make short work out of regular mobs, and would be more dangerous than spiders or creepers, even combined (a scary thought, although a Spider+Creeper would be epic.) These Knights would use a sword, and if you killed a Knight, you could take his sword and have a bonus to damage or something. How's that for an idea? Hopefully not difficult to code.
Yea, that seems like it would work. Since skeletons and other mobs already fight between eachother, it shouldn't be hard.
The way I see it there would be 3 sides like Josrence said, maybe even more, that would spawn randomly together or follow whichever spawning system Notch decides implements. I'd like to keep the undead and have them all work together and attack nearby medieval/fantasy-themed forces and vice versa. However, if them medieval/fantasy themed forces aren't made hostile to players,(Like pigs, sheep) we could have some neat friendlies.
There should just be a theme option for the monsters Like Midevil-Generic-Future and each one would just add a basic reskin to the mobs and slightly change some of their actions... Idk?

The current default player model would be an excellent mob. He looks like the kind of mindless cockney DERP fodder that tries to hit you for no reason in fantasy games. Case in point: Fable. "EY, LIT'S BOLLY THIS CHIPPITY CHAP UP RIGHT FINE EH BADGER DIDDLY-DOO?" Just replace their tees with leather harnesses and call them "ambushers" or something.
Also, for a fantasy game, they're wearing some damn fine tees and Levis.
AI Allies might be alright but they'd have to be really weak compared to the player and monsters. So it doesn't become too easy to just set up shop near them and expect to survive forever. The game could also spawn forts and villages to diversify the world a little.

More thoughts later.

Like:
Undead Creeper Skeleton Zombie Fantasy/Medieval Friendlies Player Knights Archers Fantasy/Medieval Hostiles Orcs Spiders Trolls GoblinsAs I said earlier, it wouldn't be hard at all to implement sides like this. The hardest part would probably be skinning the new mobs.

Personally, i always think of wild western theme for some reason...
facepalm of the month- dra6o0n
Creepers are NOT undead!
They're the damned ones who wander about the islands in the sea of crafting attacking humans for notch's mistake.
Though I believe that they wish to reclaim their spot as notch's favorite servant.

notch said SURVIVAL mode is cliche fantasy-meideivally-ye old sword-ish stuff
point is survival IS meideival
