Hello! (wooooooo thread is cleaned up and much better)
-The Idea-
The idea. Where do I start? How about an introduction.
How many times have you built a rollercoaster in superflat, but wanted a mountain to pass through?
How many times have you wanted to build your own terrain from scratch?
How many times have you wanted to make an adventure/survival map with nice terrain without spending hours in voxelsniper/worldedit?
How many times have you wanted to make a lava lake or water ocean, but making the surface smooth really bugged you?
How many times have you wanted to make a survival map with mountainous terrain the way YOU want it, without having to go place the ores manually?
-The Mechanics-
Right-clicking while holding the orb would "throw" the orb - much like an ender pearl, but in a straight line towards the cursor. On the point of impact, it would generate it's corresponding generation, which I'll get to later.
Ores would generate normally in new terrain added.
This is a CREATIVE-ONLY item.
-The "Orbs"-
I'll go through the orbs, one by one. Some of them have example pictures and I'll try to get the rest later, so stay tuned. (I put all the ones with pictures in the beginning regardless of category so all the spoilers after the first one with no picture will not have pictures)
Forest generator:
After throw:
The picture pretty much shows all, it would generate a small forest at impact, making creating large forests a pinch with just a few throws of this. To increase density you would simply throw another orb near the same place.
Snow generator:
This has two ways it works. The first, throwing at solid ground, results in snow covering the ground:
After throw:
The second way, throwing it at water, will make an ice shelf:
After throw:
Lava generator:
(YES, THAT LOOKS LIKE A PIZZA, I KNOW)
After throw:
On the point of impact it will generate a smallish pool of lava, constrained by walls as shown in the pictures, making volcanos a pinch.
Dungeon generator:
After throw:
Generates a dungeon at the point of impact, with the usual 50% zombie 25% skele 25% spider chance.
Village generator:
Picture coming. I just have to raze the village to the ground and kill the inhabitants.
After throw:
Mountain generator:
No picture yet, sorry. MCEdit doesn't work on my computer and I'm too lazy to manually block-by-block copy a mountain.
This generator will generate a SINGLE mountain at the point of impact.
Hill generator:
(no picture)
Like the mountain generator, but smaller.
Flatland generator:
(no picture yet)
Flattens the chunk it hits (for when you just need flat building space in a normal world).
Plains generator:
(no picture yet)
Generates the small, gradual terrain differences that you find in plains, as well as the grass and flowers that come with it.
Jungle generator:
(no picture yet)
Yup.
Ocean generator:
(lololo you're probably not opening the spoilers at this point)
Works like the lava generator, but the pool is larger and made out of dirt water, brainiac.
Steppe generator:
(fhqwvmhlratluhlrwtmvr)
Raises the entire chunk it hits by 16 blocks. I can see some interesting terrain coming from this.
Crater generator:
spoiler? I'm not spoiling anything.
Like the steppe generator but lowers the entire chunk, the bottom 16 tiles being removed as they would be in the void. (bedrock must regenerate in the chunk, of course)
Ravine generator:
I'm getting tired of putting spoilers in.
Generates a ravine, with the TOP MIDDLE generating at the point of impact.
Generates a nether chunk in the chunk it hits. No nether fortresses included.
Nether fortress generator:
This will take a while.
Generates a nether fortress with the lowest floor (or highest?) at the point of impact, with the nether brick going down to ground level, of course.
Stronghold generator:
Generates a stronghold with the floor of the portal room at the point of impact.
Mineshaft generator:
Generates a mineshaft with a boss room at the point of impact.
-And how, exactly, would this be useful?-
Glad you asked.
By generating a superflat world, it would be possible to shape completely custom terrain in a pinch.
Adventure maps. There's so many things you could do with this, I'll just leave it to you're imagination.
Theme parks. Again, I leave this to your imagination.
Custom dungeons with the dungeon orb.
Survival maps.
Volcanos.
Huge mountains by using the mountain generator orb on top of another mountain.
Snowy forests and huge ice oceans with the snow generator orb.
Easily forest your custom maps with the forest generator.
And so much more...
-Hey. What about abusive admins/griefers?-
On servers, the server would kick anyone who used one of these orbs in survival - much like the built-in autoban for placing bedrock in survival.
Also, there exist several plugins that can remove all changes made by a certain player - just in case someone got out of hand.
Alternately, the server could have an option to erase any flying orbs thrown by a player in survival mode - much like ghast balls are erased when the ghast dies.
As a much simpler option, just make the orbs plain old not throwable in survival, much like ender pearls are not throwable in creative.
-So... what are the advantages of this over voxelsniper/worldedit/MCEdit?-
Voxelsniper/Worldedit:
These mods/plugins are very slow to use - making it take quite a long time to generate your own terrain, and cannot generate anything from vanilla minecraft, e.g. vanilla mountains, etc.
Also, these plugins are not updated with minecraft and can take up to several weeks to update with minecraft, making it so you have to keep an outdated version of minecraft until they update - which is impractical.
Also, these do not generate natural things along with their generation - e.g., ores for mountains, grass and flowers for plains, etc...
MCEdit:
MCEdit has officially been discontinued, making people rely on unstable unofficial builds. MCEdit is also very hard to use for some people, and the generation is impractical - pretty much only straight walls and cubes.

Some support for this would be nice, remember that commenting below brings this up to the front page of the suggestions area, making it so more people see it, so please do, even if all you say is "I support this idea!" (Don't post 1-word posts though.)
worldedit/voxelsniper anyone? granted it takes a little longer, but you have so much more control over the actual shape of your terrain. I doubt those orbs would/could be added to vanilla and for mods there are better solutions (imho). It would surely be a really funny mod but I think it would be too much effort to be worth it. And btw: if you are too lazy to build these mountains yourself, you could still import them with mcedit :tongue.gif: (also voxelsniper is not really hard to learn :biggrin.gif:)
edit: regarding the biome orb: this would not be possible most likely for biomes are coded into your seed
Wait wait wait. Here's your method:
Set up a server, install bukkit, install voxelsniper, learn voxelsniper, load your world in your new server, and make some spheres, then re-port the world to single player- just for one lousy custom mountain. Estimated time: 1 hour.
This method:
Open your inventory and grab the mountain generator orb. Right click to throw the orb. Estimated time: 8 seconds.
They need built-in anti griefers options in SMP before they even think of adding this. SMP needs to be able to disable any creative mode item in SMP and preferrably on a user basis.
yeah, there would probably have to be anti-griefer stuff programmed in. Or maybe only make it available in single-player, multiplayer you can just use voxelsniper.
Its a pretty neat idea... but wouldn't this cause a ton of lag? especially if its gonna happen righ b4 ur eyes to :sand what if u put a mountain orb ontop of a mountain orb? how are you going to fix your epic mistake?

and what if u put a mountain orb ontop of a mountain orb? how are you going to fix your epic mistake?
It wouldn't cause that much lag unless you were spamming it, as it would be maybe 6 chunks, which is about how many normally generate if you're sprinting in normal minecraft.
Maybe there could be a nether/end orb, so map makers could make it look like a slowly corrupting word, also, would these be dispenser-fireable?
I'm not sure about the nether/end orb, this was originally thought up as a terrain generator feature, not a complete terrain overhauler. And I'm not sure about dispenser-fireable, I'm not really sure what the point of that would be, except maybe an adventure map (were those mountains there before?...) I dunno though.
Anyways thanks everybody for responding but remember this will never be realized if it doesn't reach mojang.
You know, I kinda like this idea! I don't think it would work for biomes because, like someone else said, those are coded into the seed. For biomes I would prefer an option in the superflat generator to choose biomes by percentage. However, for terrain, this would be awesome!
Post it wherever it can get noticed. This would be awesome for creative.
And as for the "what if u put a mountain orb ontop of a mountain orb" issue, it could just create a larger mountain. Or a mountain on top of a mountain: Minecraft physics allow that. Then they can learn to be more careful.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
It is an interesting but depressing reality that most politicians are just regular people with power. And most people would be as bad as politicians if only they could get some power.

Very nice idea.
Great idea though, if there is some way to control it from being spammed.

And, well, I guess you just shouldn't do that =D

Make them only useable once?

EXACTLY.
