The villages in this game need a serious overhaul. The design is not the problem at all, its the way these villagers live inside of them.
Its sad, really. You see an NPC village, and you can do whatever you want to it. You can steal the wheat, you can loot the chest, you can even burn down the village, and the NPC's would not care. It's an obvious point, but the poor villagers need to be overhauled in order to make the game a lot more fun, alive, and a bit more challenging.
THE IDEA
You know how Pigmen and wolves are unique mobs in the fact that they're not hostile until they need to be, right? Let's apply that to the villagers! It makes so much sense it's pretty funny that i didn't find it in the "already suggested" post. It would NOT be hard at all for jeb to implement that, considering the AI is ALREADY in the game, and it would give the villagers a LOT more respect.
Let's take it to another level now. In addition to providing the NPC's with a "pack" mentality, we should give them the ability to protect their territory. Think about it. The NPC village is only up to 4 chunks wide. Jeb could establish a "safe zone" kind of thing for the NPC's within those 4 chunks. If any block within those 4 chunks is broken or a foreign block is put down by a non-villager (read: you) they become hostile and chase you off of their land, aka their 4 chunks, and they stay hostile towards you from then on, just like an angry pack of wolves stays angry with you until you die. In addition, they should be able to detect if you have a "hostile item" like flint and steel, like cows detect if you have wheat, and become hostile towards you if it is in your hand. Finally, i think that because chest's have recently been added to the villages, the villagers can take advantage of whats inside of them, like the swords and armor, and put it on in case of an intruder. I don't think this can be put in very soon, but the other suggestions are very attainable, mainly because they already exist in the game, lol.
This AI overhaul would add a new sense of victory in taking over a village, and it would make Minecraft feel much more alive for the time being. Thanks for reading!
Maybe how about only their structures?
Because i ussually search recources and mine on caves around their 'village' for in case nightfall I could hide on one of their buildings for one night and go back to where I belong.
