I have to say i enjoy minecraft but what it is really lacking is an "official" graphics overall. Im not talking about the models, the blocky landscape is nice and retro and is the heart of the game which shoudnt be changed, but as noted there are a lot of texture packs out there, texture packs arnt the main priority since there are already a nice few for the game as it is (though would be nice there was an "offical" HD texture pack".
The main thing i see is that there is no reason just because the game is based on a "retro" feel, it cannot eventually support and include modern day graphics advances i am mainly speaking about lighting, shaders, and dynamic shadows which can add a world of difference to a game.
Now its true that graphics dont make a game, for games that feature exploration, building, exploring large multiplayer worlds it would be nice to have something that is a bit more attractive. Even 3rd party knock offs like fortress craft on the Xbox 360 uses some of these more modern rendering features to nice effect. In my opinion it should be entirely an option, that was users of older computers still can run the game, but perhaps an alternate client or advanced settings that take use of these features. We have the GLSL shaders mod and with the sonic ether's unbelievable shaders mod for it it really does look nice, however considering that its a 3rd party user made add on, performance may not be quite as good as it could be (runs a bit slow on my computer but still neat for viewing builds and such)
I just hope such features will be considered for the future and at the VERY least it would be nice if eventually they add anti aliasing options to the base game.
Graphics arnt everything of course but seeing just a little bit of the dynamic shadow/lighting shaders mod for the game it really makes me think of the potential of future official updates could be and it might even bring more people into the game who may be a bit turned off by the basic graphics.
Just some thoughts. lighting is something that i think expecally can go a long way in the game, its good to see with some updates though lighting has been improved a bit vs what it was in the past.
so lets hope in the future there will be such nice updates!
Minecraft i think can be quite pretty on its on even with the basic graphics and a decent texture pack. The creations that players make is beyond my comprehension at times so lets hope for some nice updates in the future!
but the fact at all that people were able to add dynamic shadows and shaders to the game without access to the source code is amazing alone in my thoughts! so way to go community!

What? All mods use the Minecraft source code... You can decompile compiled Java applications, and MCP allows for useful renaming of classes and fields.

Simple answer to this, they can have a "classic mode" that uses all oldschool shaders and a "modern" graphics mode with all the latest and greatest. I personally, would love dynamic soft shadows and bloom.
