First of all, I must say- This could very much be something like the eventual maybe-some-day release of adventure mode, and would require a lot of adventure-mode type things: NPCs (maybe some audio dialogue?), a basic quest system, block breaking restrictions, etc.
But anyways, here is the idea: When you booted up minecraft, and created a new world, there would be an option to switch to campaign mode. Starting that would put you into a prefab world level that was semi-linear, with a beginning and an end, and some semblance of a story line. Adventure-mode hijibly whatsits would be in play here. When you completed the "quest" in that world, you would be beamed into the next level, another prefab world with the same systems in place, acting as a continuation of the events in the previous world.
Now, the campaign itself would be a crowd sourced collaboration project. The idea would be that somebody at mojang writes up a story, does some artwork for levels, defines that min/max size for certain levels, and then a series of competitions are held. Different people would then be free to create sections of the game within the restrictions mojang sets, and then all of those community created sections of the game would be linked up at mojang and published as a part of the vanilla game.
From there I can imagine expansions to the campaign being relatively painless- Just hold another competition, set the restrictions, maybe tie in some new mobs and gadgets- Blamo! Crowd-sourced expansion. Campaign add-ons could even serve as showcases for updates, featuring new biomes, mobs, features, etc.
There are going to be those who say that the normal adventure maps already serve this purpose, and to some degree they do. They simply to it in a rather clumsy boring sort of way- If you want to, you can just dig through a trap, skip a hard part, and pretend the story is non-existent. It's simply not engaging, and often times boring. The point of a system like this would be to both fuel the community with ideas and creative direction, and to also create a sense of direction and importance in adventure maps. It would create progression, which minecraft still lacks.
Does anybody think this is a good idea? To be completely honest I'd just like to see some of FyreUK's stuff get showcased in a more fancy way.
Terraria managed to tell a story just fine without block breaking restrictions (in fact, your ability to change the environment is a major part of your success in boss battles), and with nothing other than snarky comments made by the NPCs that showed up out of the blue for dialogue.
The difference is that the story was discovered entirely by the player, not spoonfed to you in cutscenes.
The story is there, you just have to find it.
That is how minecraft's story should be told, if it is to have one.

Personally, I have to agree with Gameguy - the reason Minecraft is so awesome is because we create our own story. Whether that be as simple as naming your wolves and fighting zombies or building entire cities and creating a story for them, the players create the story. Mojang just sits back and gives us the tools necessary for that to happen.
HOWEVER. That said, I wouldn't mind if Mojang gave some us map-makers more tools to make better-looking maps - tools to create cutscenes, etc. A lot of that stuff is already in Bukkit mods and Adventurecraft (Adventurecraft, especially, does an amazing job of allowing players create stories), and so once the Modding API is added those will be more widely available and hopefully more accessible to players.
We have the tools to create truly amazing stories - the Yogscast with their Shadow of Israphel series is an excellent example. So long as you have the creativity, the time, and the patience...anything is possible.

I was thinking more along the lines of-
Mojang: "Hey guys! We have this awesome new mob! It's crazy beast and awesome!"
Minecrafters: "Awesome! Let's make a campaign add-on that features this epic new mob!"
Mojang: "We aggree!"
So, new campaign sections wouldn't call for new mobs, but new mobs would call for new campaign sections. Thanks for the response!
