Deserts should be defined by low humidity, not high temperature.
Dessert landscape should change based on temp. High temp is sand, low temp is ice, in between is gravel and grass-less dirt.
Low humidity should affect plant growth.
Low humidity conditions plus nearby water plus trees == medium humidity and grass. Cut down the trees and the humidity level can drop. Planting trees in low humidity areas near water would require irrigation to the sapling to grow, and would raise the humidity level around the tree.

Humidity is an interesting mechanic, but I don't think it's one that would make for a better Minecraft experience. There isn't an easy way to convey it, and too many things would hinge on knowing just how humid it is.

ah, no. The equatorial rainforests are hot. And they are more humid than anywhere else in the world. And the antarctic is supposed to be one of the dryest [ie no humidity] places on earth.
Isn't the desert already a low humidty area? no rain fall, no grass, rare and very random Oasis's but thats it. Seems pretty low humidty already, oh and its hot there, there is no shade.

I looked at the biome page on the wiki once, they all have temperature and humidity, deserts have high temperature and low humidity. IRL The thing that really makes a desert a desert is low humidity, deserts can be any temperature, but always dry.
