Nothing crazy like, gathering all plants in a [large radius], just a little change to keep the hoe semi-useful after the initial field tilling. Breaking a melon block or pumpkin block would be faster if you used a higher grade hoe, similar to how fast you can get through cobble stone with a wooden / stone / iron / diamond pickaxe.

I kind of agree, even though the best solution to cutting stems would be the shears or sword in my personal opinion, but for the sake of the Hoe I agree whole heartily. +1 my good friend, I have always thought this should happen.

Villagers need to turn into zombies once killed by a zombie... March 24th 2012
I like the idea. The poor little hoe gets almost no attention. I love minecraft farming, and have always wanted it to be a little... more. This would be a great start. =) +1 for you and a head
I would like to see the tool required for 'harvesting' pumpkins and melons changed from 'axe / sword' to 'hoe'.

you have to slice apart melons and pumpkins
it's not like hitting them with a hoe would do any good

Perhaps on the pumpkin, I have not tested how the different qualities of axe effect the harvest speed.
On the melon however; the 'grade' of sword you use on it has virtually no effect on the speed of gathering.
A diamond sword is literally only one 'punch' animation faster then breaking the block with your hands.
genius!
