Mirror armor is a simple type of armor that uses a heavy disc or plate on the front to provide a good amount of protection to the chest and belly, the largest target on the body.
I suggest that Mirror Armor could be added as a replacement for the Breastplate. Mirror Armor would be able to be made of nearly anything that normal armor is made from, but instead of leather, it would be made of wood. Mirror armor would require 6 material plus 2 string to go over the shoulders.
Mirror armor would be different from the Breastplate in that it would provide +1 full armor point (two half armor points, in other words) to all damage received from the front half of the player. However, from the back half, it has -1 1/2 armor points.
This would give you good protection in especially areas like mineshafts where the mobs will mostly come from one direction, or when there is only one or two mobs to focus on. In larger areas or against more mobs, the armor loss in the back would be a little bit debilitating as you will be hit from multiple sides.
That's what I meant. Nobody would use it because the difference is too small. I don't see this as a worthy addition to the game.
One full point of armor extra is what an iron helmet or boots gives you, one and a half armor points is what iron leggings gives you.
With full set of diamond, with breastplate, you get 80% damage reduction. If you used Mirror Armor, you would get an 88% reduction in damage from the front.
Further, you save some in material value especially with diamond and iron, since you're replacing 2 ingots or diamonds with string instead.

In that case, since it's hard to get hit in the back, mirror armor would be overpowered, both in protection and in materials.

You wouldn't be replacing it at all. Unless you mean why you would use it, personally.

It's not that hard to be hit in the back. Here, the back also includes the sides.
Think about how often creepers sneak up behind you and explode. Yeah.
The creeper would kill you from any side anyway.
But still, I don't see how this adds value to the game. It's basically armor that's stronger on the front and weaker on the back.
