Well. This time, I'm suggesting Airships. Yeah. This is sorta long... so be prepared.
I. Why Airships?
These would add some flavor to exploring and battles (imagine a PvP airship battle). They would a little bit of a steampunk theme to Minecraft, which I, personally, would like.
II. Basic Concepts.
All airships would start out with a hull. Made from 4 iron ingots or 4 wood planks on the 3x3 crafting grid, they would be able to cover 1 block. They can be interconnected so you can customize your craft. If you put 2 pieces of hull together, they will combine making from 1 1x1 to 2 2x1 pieces. They may be undone, as to be able to modify your craft. You may place blocks on it, for customization and for protection. Any block on the hull and the blocks above it (to 5 blocks)or below it (1 block) will also be propelled forward. If the hull beneath then is destroyed, the blocks above it will cease to be propelled (unless they get push by another block that it propelled).
III. Control and Propulsion.
To propel your craft, you must make either a propeller or a turbine. Propellers may be crafted as so:
E = empty C= cobblestone R= Redstone S = Stick P= Propeller blade.
EPE
CSC
CRC
To craft propeller blades is as follows
M = Wood Planks or Iron Ingots E=Empty
EME
EME
MEM
Propellers may have iron or wood blades, of which iron is faster and more stable.
For a Turbine,
I=Iron Ingot P= Iron propeller R= Redstone E= Empty
III
PRE
III
Propellers with wood blades push at 1 block per second while Propellers with iron blades push at 3 blocks per 5 second.
.........................................................................................................
As for control, you must make a Control Stick, which may be crafted as follows
L= Lever R= Redstone C=Cobblestone E= Empty
ELE
CRC
CCC
It would look like a lever on a cobblestone slab. To control the craft, you must right-click on the Control Stick and controlls are as follows
PgUp - rise
PgDwn - decrease altitude
Up Key - forward
Down Key -Reverse
Left Key - turn left
Right Key - Turn Right.
IMPORTANT: As long as the propulsion system and the control box is connected, no Redstone Wire is required.
For anything else NOT on the hull, Redstone is Required to power it.
For making armor plating, you must place iron ingots or diamond in a 2x2 pattern to make 8 Armor Plating (can be diamond or iron). Iron would be effective against AP rounds while Diamond would be more effective vs. HE rounds (we'll get to that later). one piece of armor plating would cover one piece of hull.
.................................................................................
VI. Weapons.
The part you are all waiting for, weapons. Your craft may be equipped with cannons.
...............................................................................
NOTE: If you would like cannons to be land-based as well, say so in your post.
...............................................................................
Cannons may be crafted as so:
E= empty I= iron ingot R= Redstone
III
ERI
III
They will take up 2 blocks, one for the base and one for the barrel. They may be fired at will via redstone or manually fired. To load the ammo, it would be like the dispenser interface, except for 9 spaces it would have 2
There would be 2 kinds of ammo, AP (armor piercing and HE (high Explosive)
HE would be as powerfull as TNT, but unable to destroy any hull pieces.
AP would penetrate 1 block then explode, with 20% less power than a HE round.
The HE round will be crafted as follows:
I= iron ingot G= gunpowder
III
GGI
III
The AP Round will be crafted as follows:
I= iron ingot G= gunpowder
III
GII
III

Sadly, it's in 1.0.0, but you can always use M.C. Nostalgia. But, if you don't like that mod there is a mod called the Zeppelin mod. You can create say a boat or a UFO and you can fly it. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/488434-110-zeppelin-024-wip/
Silverfish are cool. Watchu got against them?
