Endermen, they are 3 block high creatures that appear to be distorted and apparently very tall humans. They're weak to water and will attack you if you break a stare with it. They appear enraged.. but their rage isn't much of a rage. Honestly, they just quickly run or teleport to you and do lots of damage.
Extra Pick-Up for Most Damage
So what if they got smarter? Their new AI is (hopefully) coming and might include this. Endermen pick up blocks, right? What if they pick up the best block to deal the most damage? Each block would do some amount of extra damage, with a minimum of 1 extra damage point or half a heart. Most blocks would have this.
Mob Pick-Up for the Worst Tag Team
Now, what will they pick up if they have so little? They can't even move stone.. well, they don't have only rocks in their fight against the humans. They have partners too, undead zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers and silverfish. All endermen will pick up one of those mobs randomly, each doing extra damage per hit and giving the enderman the added abilities of these mobs. These are what the Endermen get when they pick up certain mobs:
Creepers: The Creeper will detonate in his hand
Skeletons: They will move the skeleton in their hands to effectively make an Aim-Bot
Zombies: They will be slower, but also have stronger attack power and the zombie's armor
Silverfish: They can pick up stone in exchange for trading the silverfish, which does extra damage
Spiders: They can jump up four blocks high and climb over walls, making the Enderman something you never wanted to look at
"Seeking Power" Phase
When an Enderman is angry it will look for the most damaging block or mob, priority goes like this:
Spider
Creeper
Skeleton
Zombie
Silverfish
If one mob isn't accessible within 64 blocks (it can be stared at in this range) of the Enderman, then it will go to the next on the list. If no mobs are accessible in this range, they will move on to blocks, priority and damage is like this.
TNT: Will explode in the Enderman's hand if you're close enough
Stone: 6 Extra Damage Points, 3 Extra Hearts (Only if Silverfish is in hand)
Cactus: Will attempt to place it directly next to you, instead of additional damage per hit
Pumpkin or Melon: 5 Extra Damage Points or 2 and a half Hearts
Gravel or Sand: Will place either above your head to suffocate you, instead of additional damage
Grass, dirt, mycelium and clay: 2 Extra Damage Points or 1 Heart
Flower, Rose, Brown and Red Mushroom: 1 Extra Damage Point or half a Heart
Any Enderman will not go into "Seeking Power" phase until they are angry, so these will only pick up that cactus or creeper if you stared.
TL;DR: Endermen pick up Overworld mobs and blocks that do more damage.
