If you set off a lot of TNT, it works by one TNT striking others and having them get shot by other exploding TNT into surrounding terrain. This is laggy, ugly, unrealistic, and boring (after your 4th "nuke").
What it should do is: if you have a rectangular prism (or a cube if you don't know that cubes are also R.P.s) of TNT or maybe even just some symmetrical* shape involving 4 or more TNT, it should create just ONE EXPLOSION at the center of the TNT mass. The explosion should have the same blast power as all of the TNTs combined.
Why? Just one explosion going off is less laggy than a whole bunch of entities flying around and blowing up. Also, it would be way more realistic (in a good way)! A big bomb should be a big bomb, not a bunch of tiny bombs that go off one after another.
They'd have to add more blast resistance to obsidian, water, and lava to make it so they don't get blown up, but that's no problem.
*"Symmetrical" is meant loosely. Mojang should try to make it combine the blast powers for any large blob of TNT that is almost symmetrical. I wouldn't count something that is symmetrical in just 1 or 2 dimensions (like a line of TNT) "symmetrical" for this.
This is almost 60K TNT going off. Look at how ugly and unrealistic it is. It would be laggy if it wasn't running on my fast server.
I haven't seen any TNT cannons that have symmetrical masses of TNT on them. By "symmetrical", I mean in all dimensions, so a line of TNT wouldn't count.
I meant it as a loose term. For example, I'd call a blob of TNT that is not quite symmetrical but is obviously in a shape meant to be a large bomb "symmetrical" for this purpose.

Wouldn't it be hard to code the game to tell the difference between a blob and a cannon?
Great idea, and it would help out people with older hardware trying to make explosions. However, it may still lag a lot, due to so many chunks having to update.
I would rather say to have it as a megacraft akin to a nether portal. Therefore, making a 3x3x3 would create a single block of TNT with the power of 27 tnt.
I would say to have 3x3 be the basic (and only) megacraft for TNT.
A single giant explosion would end up looking bad. With the way explosions are calculated (ray tracing) you're going to have a very sea urchin like crater.
Any attempt at a better looking crater is going to bring performance right back down again.

Well, they have to update anyway with the current system. The point of this is to not have entities flying around (entities cause the most server lag). One big explosion would certainly lag less.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
A cannon is a 1x1xn rectangular prism of TNT. You can do it with simple calculations.
