Let's face it, the terrain generation of 1.7 was way cooler than the terrain of 1.0.0.
However they do both have their cool generations
1.7
Pros
-Created forest mountains and lots of floating islands making it fun for exploration
-Caves are a lot more detailed and had large open areas for ambushes from mobs
-Created awesome rolling hills and nice size mountains with detail
Cons
-Oceans weren't big enough (Let's face it, oceans are awesome)
-Could not make the islands we always wanted.
-Deserts were small and very boring.
1.8-1.2.0
Pros
-Creates very large deserts and snow covered areas
-Rivers and Ravines made it look more realistic (Personally I think ravines need to be bigger)
-Villages and strongholds create a new exploration to the world
-Mountains are large (see cons for more on the mountains)
-Oceans
-Jungles
Cons
-Villages Spawn in weird areas (I found a floating village one time)
-Mountains are bland and lack trees (I see lots of mountains covered with trees in real life so why not in Minecraft!)
-Caves are bland and very rarely have open areas for ambushes.
-Swamps are hideous
So ya you get my point, if we were to add all pros of the terrain together with 1.7 and 1.2.0 we could get a pretty good map going here.
Congrats, you aren't the first person to think of this! It's been talked about before, A LOT!
Yes I know it's been talked about a lot, so I am bringing it to everyone's attention again. At least I have something to back up on unlike most people that just say "Hey we need to make 1.7 terrain generation in the newer version of minecraft."
I say that instead of combining the terrain types, we revert the terrain gen back to 1.7, but add rivers, ravines, mineshafts, strongholds and villages (but fix the sh*t village spawning) then we would have perfect generation.
EDIT: Sorry for bump, I didnt realise this was an old post :/
I wouldn't say deserts were boring. Every biome back then had topographical variation. However, every biome was too small for their own good. Biome size is good right now (but I wouldn't mind having them put small biomes in). The structural additions of the adventure update such as villages, abandoned mines, and strongholds are great. The new jungles and the new blocks are amazing.
But yes, the 1.7 generator had WAAAAY more types of terrain. Every seed was different and every part of your world was unique. And I'm going to bring back a quote from the "Did the Terrain Become BORING?" thread if you don't mind...
One of the points of the adventure update was to motivate us to explore, but...
Many of the features included in the 1.7.3 terrain generator that brought the game to life were removed when 1.8 arrived. Because variety is now lacking in every Minecraft world, every seed is basically identical and every part of your world is identical. With that being said, there is too much predictiveness in the terrain.
Where'd all the surprises go: seeds like Glacier and gargamel; forest/sand/snow mountains that'd make the extreme hills biome look inferior; finding only one cave in an area that turned into a massive complex.
Where's the neater beaches made of sand or gravel? Where's the mixed variety? The height variation?
Tell me...
What's the point of exploring if everything looks the same and you know what's ahead of you?
The answer to this thread is YES YES YES YES and YES. (but let's keep bigger biomes)
My big problem with mountains isn't that they're bland and treeless. My problem with them is the lack of tall, steep, rocky mountains mixed in with the grassy ones. (some could even be mainly dirt (not attached to grass) near the top) I'd love to see some giant mountains using the new height, but that kind of takes away the point I guess.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
Let's face it, the terrain generation of 1.7 was way cooler than the terrain of 1.0.0.
...nah, I don't really agree with you.
Or appreciate you assuming everyone does. I like my varied biomes and treeless mountains, thanks.
IMO, what the terrain generation really needs right now is to take advantage of the increased height limit.
