I know there is a mod for this, but it's probably the most useful update for minecraft yet! continue to read to see why.
By increasing the height limit of chunks it causes the game to lag, making it impossible to build good constructions with no lag.
By making the world generate chunks that are 16x16x16 that stack on the x,y and z axis instead of 16x16x128+ that only stack on x and z axis the world can generate in all directions with no lag increase or limit!
This will also remove bedrock altogether from the world, as the world is infinite on y axis. the caves will just keep on going! (Bedrock can still be used for creative mode construction though.)
For this to work the y axis central point must be set at 0, like x and z's, going down will cause it to go to negative figures and up goes to normal figures, like x and z.
Currently the x and z axis are limited to go up to 32 million blocks from point 0, this most likely will be applied to the y axis, but it's almost impossible to get that far, it takes hours of walking just to get 10000 blocks!
What would also be neat to go with the update is a terrain configuration menu for singleplayer and terrain.properties file for servers to allow for terrain customisation so you don't have to look through millions of seeds to get close to what you REALLY want! Terrain Control plugin sets a good example of this.
A terrain toggle between 1.8 and 1.7 in the terrain configurations will satisfy all the protests made by the terrain generation change.

Don't we already have threads about this? The mod thread is a shining beacon on its own, but there are also suggestion threads that have discussion on the matter.
However, the vertically infinite world is just stupid, and removing bedrock is even more.
Let me tell you why, even with Cubic chunks all that information would be saved in the game, if we had vertically and horizontally infinite worlds, well, expect 50 GB in your save file, and TWICE THE LAG YOU GET NOW.
Also, i dont think chunks should be 16*16*16, because those chunks are to small, a small error in chunk loading while falling down could make the player fall into the void with no reason ( stated by notch )
32x32x32 is also not enough.
64x64x64 could be... could be... but i think it would lag too... or even more, but more testing should be done.
Can you give me a link to the mod you are talking about?

The Sun rises in the North! Now these points of data make a beautiful line...
Did he? i did not see this, is there a reason why?
One problem with that:
Notch isn't the lead developer of Minecraft anymore. All new additions are in the hands of Jeb.
Then let's hope jep says yes, this will improme mc a lot compared to a tall jungle tree update

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
