Poisons would be used to amp up weapon damage! This would add poisonous weapons and arrows to the game. Poisons would also give spiders a new drop and another use for cacti. Poison would damage mobs similarly to the way fire works. To poison weapons, simply place the poison and the weapon into the crafting grid.
Obtaining Poison:
Cave Spiders could occasionally drop Poison Sacs on death. Putting Poison Sacs with a bottle of water into a crafting grid gives one Poison I. Cactus Green can be crafted into Poison I by putting one cactus green into the crafting grid with a bottle of water. This will yield one Poison I. Putting two poison into the crafting grid will turn it into the higher tier of poison. So to obtain Poison III place a Poison II and a Poison I into the crafting grid. Poison will be used up after one hit due to the fact that it's fairly easy to obtain. To fit in with the new Jungle Biomes, I thought of two more ways to obtain poison. The first (and probably easier to implement) way is to add a poisonous flower. Jungles have many poisonous plants/animals. So adding a poisonous plant makes perfect sense and I don't think it would be incredibly hard either. Just put the flower into the crafting grid with a bottle of water to get Poison I. Another perfect thing to add would be snakes. Snakes would drop Snake Fang on death. Putting a Snake Fang with a bottle of water in the crafting grid yields one Poison I . Also being hit by snakes would poison you just like Cave Spiders.
Tiers:
Poison I: .5 a heart of damage 3 times
Poison II: 1 heart of damage 3 times
Poison III: 1.5 hearts of damage 3 times

*I'm aware that this has been suggested before, but I feel my idea added some more things than other people's ideas have!*
I like the idea of a new use for cactus, although I imagine it'd be guite hard to make a simple system for applying poison to weapons. The most obvious is to craft them together, but that'll be no use in the middle of a fight, as it'll just take too long.
There are already poisons brewed from spider eyes, so this is sort of already in the game. If you were to use cactus, I'd recommend using the dye, as it's another stage of crafting, and stops you running into a desert, punching a cactus, then instantly having poison.
Personally I find the current poison system fine. If you wanted to include cactus, perhaps crafting it with the poison bottle would make more sense (The spikes would do additional damage on a direct hit, although having a glass bottle smashed over your head is pretty painful anyways). It'd be fine to use spikes in this situation, as there has already been a relatively long crafting process to make the poison.
My main goal was trying to add a new use for cactus into the game, and as I was thinking I thought "Hey, some spiders a poisonous" so I just threw it in to add more substance to the idea. I also do not like the current poison system because it requires a trip to the nether to be able to craft potions. Which, in reality you wouldn't have to travel to another dimension just to have poison. So I figured this was a nice alternative.
However I do agree, the crafting aspect needs changing due to its inconvenience during combat.
