So, farming happens. And wolves (and ocelots) are befriended. A lot of Minecraft involves interacting with animals. And if there's one trait I've observed regardless of whether or not the mob is even the slightest bit programmed to care about you is that people make up stories and relationships with the mobs. It's a human thing. We see that block-headed pig staring at us for a moment and we decide it must be judging us with those stupid, glazed eyes. The only thing that impedes this, I find, is that once you have two of any mob next to each other, they become hard to set apart. I've had a simple thought for fixing that. Well, simple-sounding; I have no idea about how complex this'd be to code.
Passive mobs should spawn with a 5x5 pixel design on one flank, their back or their head. The design would be one of a set of, say... twenty. Simple things like a heart, a star, a diamond, a number, ect. The design would then be given a random colour from a set of, say, 20. The result is that each passive mob is likely to have a unique mark from the rest, creating an identity that the player can attach to. Then when a pig gives the player a dumb look, the player can see it has a star on its flank and say "oh, that's the one that I called Suzy. Suzy's such a dumb piggy." People enjoy narratives, and this'd enable them to imagine their own narratives.
How does that sound?

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
i guess but maybe something less obvious like a different skin tone or a birthmark.
If it could be made less obvious but still identifiable, absolutely. That sounds better than hearts and stars. Again, there'd need to be somewhere around twenty of these things, differentiated by shape. Then twenty distinguishable colours. The goal is that you can spend about half of a second looking at the symbol from perhaps five blocks away and be able to recognize it, if you're familiar with it.
It's no revolutionary idea, but I thought it should be recorded somewhere for possible access in the future.
