I accidentally deleted the original one. Here's my idea:
On Mining
-Ground to 20 blocks below=Wood/Stone Pickaxe
-20-40 blocks below=Hand Drill, Gold/Iron Pickaxe
-40-lowest=Dynamite, Diamond Pickaxe
-Tools have less durability
A hand drill is a tool that has no durability, but using it takes out your hunger 0.5x faster. Its also SLIGHTLY slower but breaks a nearby block.
Dynamite comes from the current TNT recipe. TNT would take 9 Dynamite to make just to balance it. Dynamite has a TINY explosive radius, but "weakens" nearby blocks, making them destroyable using a Stone Pickaxe.
With this system, minecarts would be more used to carry explosives, food, tools etc. Wouldn't it fun to give purpose to Mining tunnels.
Just a simple suggestion. It popped up while I was thinking of something else..
making blocks have health meters would require an overhaul of the game mechanics so each block would have health bars that dont reset to 100% if you stop digging at a block. Most likely would never happen, too big of a change.

I just said make tools weaker and blocks stronger. Not really big at all.
No. This would be to annoying for some players. Who, like me use stone pickaxes unless mining things that can't be mined with them. Also it would get annoying to be in a cave system and suddenly be unable to mine blocks.

Let's see- you're unnecessarily increasing the complexity of mining for no clear reason, making diamonds almost impossible to get (goodbye enchanting, mining obsidian, and jukeboxes), and destroying the feasibility of underground bases and large projects due to the difficulty of getting even iron in sufficient quantities.
Yes, this is, indeed, an absolutely terrible idea that would break the game.

You got me there. Please don't lower the durability of Swords, Axes and Hoes, specially Shovels that got a quite low durability.
Just the pickaxes.
