Here's an idea for a fun little minigame to add to Minecraft. It wouldn't be the goal of Minecraft, not by any means, but it'd add a fun thing for any OCD player to check off their list of achievements.
In any given Minecraft world, a set of diamond armor and tools should appear once, randomly scattered across mineshaft chests. Only one of each type of armor and tool would appear, and they could be anywhere (though made likely to appear in mineshafts not too far from spawn, not thousands of meters away). No more than one of these items would appear in any one mineshaft chest, so that gives you 9 different chests total to find.
These items would all be enchanted with the "Legendary" enchantment, which would just duplicate the effect of Protection III/Unbreaking III. So it's pretty decent, but not as powerful as something you could enchant yourself with multiple enchantments. The point isn't to get it for the power. You'd want it because the Legendary enchantment would not appear outside of those 9 items. They'd be utterly unique in the world.
There'd be no way of finding them other than extensive exploration. Finding even one would be a major achievement. Being able to collect the entire set would let you deservedly claim title as the ultimate adventurer, and possessing a legitimate one would give you major bragging rights on any SMP server.
Like I said, it wouldn't change the game much. But it gives you a specific goal beyond random riches when exploring mineshafts.
Hmm... I'm not too sure of this. Part of it seems like a good idea, part of it doesn't.
I personally despise finding diamonds near the start of the game. I found some in a chest in a Village, and it just didn't feel right. I feel like you should at least complete the achievement of mining to near-bedrock before finding diamond tools. Stumbling on diamond just doesn't feel right.
These tools need to be extraordinarily rare, and need very extensive exploration in order to find just one. Perhaps not as rare as finding a music disc in a dungeon, but pretty rare.
Otherwise, it actually seems pretty neat. Instead of doubling Unbreaking/Protection III, why not just make it a level IV or even V enchantment that cannot be obtained through enchanting tables? It seems less powerful, but reasonably powerful for such a rare object. At least it isn't level VI, that seems a tad ridiculous in my eyes.
They would be extremely rare (only 9 items in the entire world) and very hard to find, since you'd have to explore mineshafts to get them. So it's not like villages where you can safely find them on the surface, you'd have to go underground into danger to get these.
Giving it another enchantment could be neat. I don't think it should grant an effect the player can't get on their own though.
