THE FOLLOWING MAY WELL BE THE RAMBLING OF A CRAZY PERSON
Well, I did some thinking, We all know that mine-crafts engine wouldn't run a mining helmet that just glows around you well ,But what if we made a hat that placed infinte torches (Glowstone torches? weaker then normal torchlight?)
So when you right click on a wall, it would place the torch, At the cost of no head protection and a weaker torch light?
I was thinking something like this?
Perhaps It would only work at night? Maybe throw a clock into the recipe? maybe you charge it with the magic of the sun? then you can use it at night.
I'm trying to balance this idea.
Idk, I'm Really doubting myself on weather it would "fit" the style of the game. It would have to have a durability.
And You would have had to be at diamond level in order to make it, (glowstone=portal=diamond pick)
So I don't know? tell me what you think.
TL; DR. A hat that places weak torches,
Also, Sry to self promote, but can you check this out?
That is a decent idea, but glowstone gives off more light then torches so it wouldn't make much since :wink.gif: Maybe redstone torches? And they actually have a multiplayer mod that lets you put a glowstone block on your head and gives off light. So with that said, it would be possible. It doesn't drop fps at all either.

Hmm... Maybe you could instead make it have to be "charged" with redstone; ie, craft 64 redstone in, restore 64 durability, and you can "charge" blocks with lit redstone, which are as bright as a torch, but only last for a certain amount of time? Solar charging is also nice; maybe it could have a special pedestal that you place it on, and as long as that's in direct sunlight, its durability slowly rises?
I think it would be a good idea but maybe have a limit to the amount of torches? Also try to make it a bukkit plugin since a lot of people only play multiplayer.
Dynamic lightsources are "too memory hogging" according to them, You're more likely to get a "night sight" enchantment that makes your screen brighter the lower the light is around you.

Did you read the post? I never said Dynamic light,
Erm, I'm sort of doubting the whole "would it fit into the game?" thing, too. I just imagined some robotic arm attached to Steve's head, placing torches on the wall for him. It seemed somewhat preposterous.
I find it unnecessary, as you might as well just put some coal and sticks together for torches, instead of gathering more harder-to-get materials that don't work as well and would be more valuable in a different use.
Maybe it could cast a beam of light that goes forward, but not radially. It would only last as long as you don't move, I suppose. I don't think it would be worth the coding time or materials, but that's just me.

Why not use coal?
