Rope, such a simple thing that has been used for millennium for countless uses, showing that just a braided cord of individual fibers can be useful. Rope could possibly be crafted with a row of string to create a cord, then several cords could be used to create rope. I am not sure upon the crafting method exactly however.
Rope could possibly be used for tying things, or even restraining mobs to a certain area. Imagine tying a creeper to a tree, or a dog, or cat so that they could perhaps protect a certain area. It could be a way to have a dog actually guard something, instead of follow you around or sit motionless. Pets need more commands.
I agree, rope is such a basic tool of survival. We neeeeed it.
I am not sure about actually using rope to climb though, it would make ladders more or less useless...but vines sort of do the same thing. Who needs to use all that wood making a ladder when they can just gather vines for free.
Of course though, ropes would be more balanced and will require quite a bit of string to create...maybe it could be made somewhat similar to bookcases.

It could also be used to just tie mobs to blocks, or perhaps as even a trap? :biggrin.gif:

Yes, it could be used similar to the fishing rod, but both ways, meaning that you can 'lasso' or tie something, then attach the opposite end to a block. Alternatively, you could rope something, say a cow, and walk with it, thus the cow will follow you. This would be more specific than using wheat, since wheat could have the entire forest following you and you wouldn't have to worry about leaving it behind as you would both move at a similar pace naturally.
I never suggested they be used for climbing exactly, like throwing a rope up somewhere and climbing up. It could be used to safely make it down a surface though, such as a tall building. Like, hook it to a block at the top by right clicking, then climb down safely I guess. Climbing up may be a bit too much as it would make vines and ladders less useful. I think you would have to go up and manually attach it to blocks, instead of simply throwing it.

I'll add more later.
