I was thinking about judging location without F3, and thought about stars. But the stars are locked on one axis...
Since one axis is timed, could the other be linked to the player's Z coordinate? The further north the player goes, the further south the sun should go. You could tell location a little better. The value would have to be made in really small increments though, since MC worlds are so huge.
Another cool effect would be in extreme distances there would be eternal day/night cycles.
Not sure how lighting timing would work in those extreme distances. Is daylight in minecraft based on time or sun location? Also, I don't know how this would work in multiplayer... I don't know if the sky's are user independent.

Again, the rotation would have to be REALLY slow. It would be just enough to sort of tell where you are in the minecraft world.
