V Disclamer Thing V
Alright Firstly, this is NOT a thread for a piston which pushes obsidian. I did a search for "Dimensional Pistons" which gave no results having anything to do with Pistons, and "Piston extensions" which gave very few results, the most recent one being updated last in october 2011. (So the thread is quite dead by now, and I don't want to be one of those necro trolls.) Also I did a check in the "Already posted" thread, which had nothing already posted about Pistons and extending them via use of a Dimensional Portal (Or really anything about pistons at all) However I am Human, so I may have missed something. Please point out a thread which has something like this if you happen to know one.
The Obsidian Piston
This is an upgrade to an normal piston, using dimensional space to allow you to extend a piston while still using that one block, how would this work? First you would need to Upgrade your currant piston.
Sticks represent Levers, Furnace is the original Non-Sticky Piston. (Slimeballs can be added later) Bedrock represents End stone, as a balence to this suggestion, obsidian represents itself, and red wool stands for redstone.
How the block would function is exactly like a normal piston, except that you can right click on it to configure how long you want it to be (Default is two, but it can go to one also) when powered it extends to the amount you set it to, and it will go up to a maximum of eight blocks. (The levers are used to do this)
The Sticky version of this piston requires two levers and some more redstone, in addition to the slimeball, looking something like this
Sticks and red wool represent redstone like before, black is the Obsidian piston, green is slimeballs and redshroom is a redstone repeater. (Giving it the time to set how many it pulls back before the power cuts out and it retracts)
Now this Sticky Obsidian piston also possesses a new set of levers, allowing you to configure how many blocks it pulls when it is no longer powered.
How does this work? The Piston uses the obsidian inside it with the end stone to open a little side dimension where all your extra piston extensions are. (So basically in the End, there is a large area full of floating halves of pistons XD.)
Uses: For starters, it would allow you to pull more blocks, so you can have drawbridges and moving walls for your fortresses/dungeons in addition, it could also be used to make elevators, perhaps using a modified version with even more reach and power.
Now the looks for this piston would look like the same piston, but with obsidian around it, perhaps going as far as to changing the piston to making the plunger part out of end stone, with the other half made of obsidian, using a beam of energy to push the end stone (Course this is a bit much, I was thinking more like a normal piston with the stone replaced with obsidian, and the back texture having a little tiny spot of end stone coming out of the back.)
A question I did think up when making this though
"Where the Hell does the extra piston parts come from?"
Several answers then came up to solve it.
1. the Piston actually uses some form of energy to push the piston, instead of the wood with iron on it. Perhaps using enderpearls to make this possible.
2. Craftable extensions made with two wood and one iron in a column shape. Possibly having a Gui at the bottom with slots for putting them in.
3. It makes them, we don't know how, but it does. (Dimensional plane of spare piston extensions Ftw?)
Another question would be "Why Extra-Planar Pistons? Why not craft piston extensions which take up more space?"
First of all that would probably be more work to code than this idea, second that would be BORING. (Mostly because it's not as bad ass as using endstone you mined with your silk touch diamond pick in the end to make super pistons to finish your epic fortress doors) and finally this makes it so you have to at least get to the end before you make this, giving you a sense of achievement from doing so.
this is my little suggestion, hope you all like it, and feel free to criticize.
It's similar, this is actually using the dimensional power of Obsidian mixed with end stone to allow you to have a larger piston while still using the single block, as opposed to making large extensions, because this would give you more freedom as to where you put it. Sort of like making a tiny rift in the end just big enough for your piston to go into.
Edit: Updated the main post a bit, answered a question I had about how the piston gets it's extensions
