I'd like to see some changes in the labels on "Controls" (Settings).
Right now there is one labeled "Drop". I just found that it is actually "Throw".
Equally, "Attack" should be changed to "Destroy" -- it destroys blocks or creatures.
----
Right now, "Turn" is forced to be mapped to the mouse. You cannot map "Turn left" or "Look up" to keys. Equally, nothing else but "Turn" can be mapped to the mouse. "Left" and "Right" key bindings are forced to be strafe (sidestep), and cannot be turn.
That was confusing for me at first, because I was trying to move one way while turning/looking, and the keys didn't do it. I have to use one hand for move/jump and a second hand for mouse turn.
----
Right now, "Use Item" is only "use item" for food, hoes, shears, boats, etc.
Swords use attack. OK. Fine.
Shovels use attack.
Pick axes use attack.
Your bare hands.
EVERY tool has the same key for "destroy".
Yet there is a durability penalty for using the wrong tool.
My first attempt at attacking "peaceful" mobs had my sword destroying the dirt block that they were standing in front of, and the mob unharmed off to the side. That's not what I was trying to do.
I'd like to see an option to give different "activate tool" commands. For example, the list might be
Chop Wood
Dig Ground
Mine
Hoe (or should it be "Till"?)
Attack
Shear
All of these might be bound to the same key. If I've got a sword, and I hit that key, then it would attack if possible, or do nothing -- the sword is not appropriate for "Dig Ground", even if the key is the same.
Note that "Hoe" and "Mine" -- the actions for the hoe or the pick-axe -- are currently on different controls because the game doesn't consider "Mine" as the action of the pick-axe, but instead that the pick-axe is a speedup (and quality upgrade) on the bare-handed mining. Heck, I can use anything at all to mine. Even a hoe, and no that didn't make sense to me the first time I tried farming :-).
---
Alternatively, if I've got the wrong tool readied, do not take action. If I've got a pick-axe, and I'm mining through stone, stop when the block behind the stone is dirt. Make me switch to either bare hands or shovel. Or maybe I don't want to keep mining at all.
On my system I will generally have destroyed one dirt block after the stone ends before I can stop.
A simple change would just keep "Attack" / "Destroy" as "Combat, mine, dig, chop", and give the various tools (axe, shovel, etc) commands for Use Item. That way, I can choose Use Item, and start digging, and stop if I'm at something that is not diggable.
If this is done, Bare Hands should not include "Mine". Dig with hands gives you dirt/sand/gravel. Chop with hands gives you wood. Mine ... destroys anything that you need a pickaxe for.

So switch tools, the only time this could ever happen is if you use a mod tool that's better than diamond, and mod tools aren't Mojang's problem.
Are you really that ...
No. Assume ignorance unless proven otherwise.
Fact: I'm asking for a user interface/control change. Not something for mods. Not something for any sort of cheat. I'm asking for something to make it easier to control the play of the game, I'm not asking for any change to gameplay itself.
Fact: The first few times I tried attacking peaceful mobs with a wooden sword I was cutting up dirt.
Fact: Using a stone pick-axe and holding down "attack", when positioned so I can chop several blocks without moving, I still cut a dirt, sand, or gravel block behind it before I stop.
Fact: At least under Java 5, events (mouse and keyboard) are not time-stamped based on when the key is pressed or released, but rather when the java program gets around to reading the keyboard; if there is lag, or if the game is running at 8-10 FPS, then there is a delay from "physical Key up" to "timestamp of Key up".
Fact: Given how the game works, by the time you see the block you are chopping removed, the next block is chopping away. A two frame delay on top of human reaction time is very real; that can be a minimum of half a second, and easily more.
Fact: I am supposed to be a person living in this block world, doing things. I'm smart enough to stop using the wrong tool, and switch to the right tool. Right now, the game's user interface encourages avatar stupidity -- I'm no longer living in this block world, instead, I'm outside the world, telling an idiot who lives in there what to do and I'm facepalming at it's idiot-ness.
it isn't that hard to scroll over and use the correct tool.
Sure it is. I have to watch for a graphic change. Then I have to stop. Then I have to press the number key for the new tool slot -- opps, wrong number, try again (they're not labeled or anything).
Or are you assuming a physical wheel on a physically separate mouse, and ignoring trackpad users? I've got "attack" on a keystroke (space); I hate false mouse-downs from trackpads.

Curse PremiumYou misunderstand.
I don't want to use the wrong tool.
The faster tools react and chop faster than I can correct it.
I would rather that nothing happens instead of consuming the next block and multiple uses.
Example: I'm swinging at a mob with a sword, and with a laggy system I chop a block instead of attacking the mob.
Example: I'm mining through stone, and suddenly I've chopped away at dirt behind the stone.
